I’m a great fan of the old English tradition of telling ghost-stories at Christmastime, in the spirit of M.R. James, E.F. Benson, Robert Aickman, and Russell Kirk. (I’m equally fond of the games played at Christmastime—Snapdragon, Smee, Charades.) As ghosts have become more and more associated with Hallowe’en, it seems that (A Christmas Carol notwithstanding) the tradition has fallen by the wayside, but I really think it’s great fun and very eerie, with the white snow swirling outside, a great phantasmic dance in a field of white...
Well! I wonder if any of you know any good ghost stories for Christmas, whether literary or cinematic. I know the BBC broadcasted the television program A Ghost Story for Christmas for several years; unfortunately, I’ve only ever seen “Whistle and I’ll Come to You,” the famed ’68 Omnibus adaptation of the M.R. James story.
Any more?

Thanks, BATouttaheck. That was a fun little story! We got out first snowfall of the year here, so my thoughts are probably going to the subject...

Not a literary story, but The X files have a fan favorite episode in season six where Mulder and Scully get trapped in a haunted house for Christmas.

Thanks, @forceghostackbar . I’ve heard of that one; I’m afraid I haven’t seen The X-Files for a while (I started looking into the show only recently and enjoyed the first few episodes—“Ice,” a variation on Hawks’s The Thing, in particular), but I may have to skip around a bit and watch some more specific episodes. Speaking of The X-Files, Lebowskidoo 🦞 alerted me in the “bah, humbug” thread to the fact that the show also ribbed Browning’s Freaks (’32) for an episode called “Humbug.” I really appreciate when a modern movie or TV program takes an older picture as an inspiration, and that seems to have happened more than once with Mulder and Scully... “Ice”— The Thing from Another World“Humbug”— FreaksAny cross-reference for the one with them in a haunted house at Christmas? A Christmas Carol? Any more?

It can take a while to get into the series. I started with season one and almost quit because there are some really bad episodes in the middle of that year. I reccomend watching some of the season 3-4 stand alone episodes. Once the series grows on you- you will love it. An episode I highly reccomend starting with is Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose in season 3. It has everything that makes the series great.

Oh, I already really like the series, Ackbar; I just got bogged down a bit with all the mythology, and then I stopped for a while. I really get bored easily when TV shows have long storylines rather than one-off episodes (which may be why I appreciated The X-Files’s MOTW episodes more—and the alien episodes, too, when they mostly told their own stories). Then it was taken off Netflix, and I just kinda let it all get away from me. But “Squeeze,” “Ice,” “Eve,” and “Beyond the Sea” are excellent. Duchovny’s acting is up-and-down here, but Gillian Anderson is consistently good. I think I’m going to skip around a bit more with the series; a lot of the episodes seem to function as mini-movies on their own.

And just a warning: it has no consistency and no satisfying resolutions whatsoever. I've always liked the MOTW episodes so much more. And dont forget: new episodes in January!
