Chinese film director Yan Jizhou died on 21 June 2018, aged 100. He ran a film unit during the Civil War, which often served on the front line and got involved in the fighting. During the siege of Datong, the three senior officers were killed and Yan Jizhou took command for a week. His military bravery and competence helped to shield him from persecution during the Cultural Revolution. During the sixties he made a number of war movies, of which the best known is Struggles in an Ancient City. His most personal and nonconformist effort, Early Morning Chill (1957), was attacked and buried. After the Cultural Revolution his work was rediscovered and officially esteemed.

Cinematographer Robby Muller has died at the age of 78. Muller worked side by side with Wim Wenders in the 1970s to create some of German cinema's defining images. He sought to work with challenging filmmakers throughout his life, building a strong creative partnership with punk icon Jim Jarmusch. Muller had a unique ability behind the camera; I remember the first time witnessing his imagery as a teenager, something that really struck me, and never left me, was how he could shoot the most intensely intimate, internalised interior shot, and place some kind of lonely-looking, external landscape behind it - [perhaps through a window, or through a door, or in a mirror ...] - and fashion a dual image on screen that felt immediate and appeared like one. He was an amazing cameraman.
'Alice In The Cities' (1974)
'Wrong Move' (1975)
'Paris, Texas' (1984)
'Repo Man' (1984)
'Mystery Train' (1989)
'Korczak' (1990)
'Dancer In The Dark' (2000)
'Coffee And Cigarettes' (2003)

Irish character star Derrick O'Connor has died aged 77. O'Connor was a member of fantasy filmmaker Terry Gilliam's stock company. He made for an unforgettable villain in the crime sequel 'Lethal Weapon 2' (1989). It was once said O'Connor and David Warner could have played brothers, such was their perceived resemblance (both actors were born in 1941).

Comic filmmaker Carlo Vanzina has died at the age of 67. Vanzina steered one of the most commercially successful franchises in Italian cinema history, the 'Vacanze' ("holiday") series which jetted gifted comedians around the globe. It's said every Italian has his or her favourite entry in the series which is comparable to the 'Carry On' film franchise in the United Kingdom. Also popular was Vanzina's 'Walking In Time' time travel series of the 1990s.
Vanzina learnt the art of comedy filmmaking from his father Steno and Mario Monicelli, giving him a firm grounding in the genre from the beginning. His regular leading man Christian De Sica was the son of Vittorio De Sica and Maria Mercader. Keen and prolific, Vanzina also worked successfully in the crime genre, directing popular titles like 'Nothing Underneath' (1985) and 'Call Girl' (1996). His contribution to Italian culture was immense.
