How's The Godfather pretentious? are there any movies besides comic-book that are not pretentious? Walk away. When someone starts talking about The Godfather being pretentious, it's time to walk away. It may not be pretentious, but it didn't portray it's main message as well as it could have. In many ways it had the opposite effect.

No surprise someone that loves kiddy Thor Ragnarok thinks films like Godfather and TDK are pretentious and overrated. Marvel studios really have warped the minds of many. I don't look down my nose at 'kiddy' movies unlike some. If I like it then I'll say so. I'm not going to pretend I enjoyed watching films like the Godfather or Citizen Kane when they sent me to sleep.

Finally if Thor Ragnarok had been eligible, the Collider's team would have put it near the top as it is better than half of the top 10 in the list and they all loved it. I doubt it will be anywhere near top 10 all time. and it shouldn't be

I'm an MCU fan but no Superhero movie has even licked the shoes of The Godfather not even TDK.

No, it's the "Seinfeld is Unfunny" effect. Movies since then have used so many elements of films like CK and The Godfather to the point that those films no longer have the impact on new watchers they had at first release. Like when people try to explain to kids today why "The Raven" is supposed to be super scary.

I would rather call it the "some-people-are-too-dumb-to-realize-how-stupid-they-are" effect. Also, CK flopped hard when it came out and only became an timeless classic much later. So much for your little theory. ![](https://s26.postimg.org/hgrq6g7tl/misc2.gif)

Do your homework, makes you less pretentious. And the ideas and innovations it introduced were still respected and replicated afterwards. Anyways, it's got nothing to do with attention spans. When the story has been told over and over again and become that ingrained to society it lacks the oomph it used to.

You act like WB and Fox aren't the ones playing it safe. And you also think that the films have to execute their casts every film or else there's no "stakes".

That's what movies should be about. Fantasy and imagination not a two or three hour mundane yawnathon.

I apologise for dissing The godfather. I should have realised that it would offend those here who appear to have been spoon fed their opinion that it is some kind of masterpiece and thus must be revered at all times.

Like when people try to explain to kids today why "The Raven" is supposed to be super scary. Good luck with that viewpoint. By the by, The Raven? The 1935 film with Lugosi and Karloff? That’s your example? The New York Times review emphasized the silly-goofy aspects. Everson wrote that it’s “..obviously done tongue-in-cheek…” It’s fairly obvious that it was intended, and seen, as a deeply ridiculous movie. It was criticized only because it was too gruesome (with which I agree)—not because it was too scary. And I’d disagree strongly with the Wikipedia article’s writer, who wrote that horror went out of vogue after this. Huh? What about (for Karloff alone) The Black Room, The Invisible Ray, The Walking Dead, The Man who Changed His Mind, Charlie Chan at the Opera, Son of Frankenstein, and a whole host of others? Or Dracula’s Daughter, The Wolf Man, or the entire second horror cycle? Pfui.

formersamhmd Swell. I thought we were talking movies, but what I wrote still applies. Has anyone ever thought that “The Raven” was too scary? In 1848, a critic criticized it for not being scary enough. It’s definite that “The Raven” was praised for its lyricism, not its frights.

It's not that it was too scary, but for such a venerated poem if you read it to kids today they'd wonder what all the hype was about.

And i've been watching Godfather since i was a teenager. And yeah, just because everybody says it's a masterpiece doesn't mean that it's not. unless you want to be cool and hate on things that people love. Wtf, are we really having a discussion comparing Thor Ragnarok to the Godfather?

There's no need to be fighting. You're having interesting discussions, don't ruin it by being too aggressive for nothing.
