Hereditary is the a new horror movie by A24 and the directorial debut by Ari Aster. The synopsis is 'When Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away, her daughter's family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry'. It premiered at Sundance and the reviews so far are incredible. I just watched the trailer and this is instantly one of my most anticipated movies of the year. I love it when out of the blue a movie comes around that almost nobody was anticipating and that, at least so far, is receiving raves from everyone. People are even already talking about it's Oscar chances for next year.

Currently it is at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes (8.8 average) and it has an 89 on Metacritic. But more important than that, here are a few quotes from the reviews:
"Hereditary takes its place as a new generation's The Exorcist—for some, it will spin heads even more savagely. Hereditary is so disquieting, you’ll be gasping for air in the theater. Utterly believable supernatural horror. There will be no scarier movie this year. If there is, it means we’re in a new golden age." - 5/5, TimeOut
"It’s pure emotional terrorism, gripping you with real horror, the unspeakable kind, and then imbuing the supernatural stuff with those feelings. The most traumatically terrifying horror movie in ages." - AV Club
"This is a remarkable, triumphant, and confident picture by Aster, who gives the film an almost meditative-like sensation, as you feel every space you’re in, every emotion, every moment of grief. Hereditary refuses to employ cheap thrills, creating its cinematic scares with atmosphere, and continuously reinventing itself at every turn." - The Playlist
"Hereditary takes the core haunting element of a spirit with a malevolent agenda and runs with it in a seemingly endless series of unexpected directions over two breathless hours of escalating terror that never slackens for a minute." - The Hollywood Reporter
"Tries to be ROSEMARY'S BABY for the 21st century and, incredibly, more-or-less succeeds!" - 9/10, JoBlo's Movie Emporium
"An exercise in dramatic tension, character drama and creepy, cultish horror, Hereditary is a fascinating hybrid that nourishes our desires to be entertained, thrilled and emotionally impacted all at once." - A, Dork Shelf
"This remarkable directorial debut from Ari Aster builds on classical horror tropes - the occult, possession, mental illness- to craft its own unique spin on terror." - NY Post
"A deeply unsettling film, the kind of horror movie that pulls from relatable human emotions like grief and resentment to ultimately become an absolute nightmare." - RogerEbert.com
"A modern-day horror masterpiece. If you'd ever like to sleep again, then you should probably steer clear of A24's latest horror offering. " - USA Today

A few new reactions:
"HEREDITARY is absolutely bone chillingly terrifying. It’s incredible and also maybe don’t see it. Like ever. It’s 3:30am and dark and windy and I’m alone and I may never be ok again. #SXSW" - Cinapse
"re: HEREDITARY. Not sure how to soften "pants-shittingly terrifying" for the newspaper. #SXSWFilm25" - Matt Shiv
"Hoo boy. #Hereditary you guys. It’s scary! Some of the creepiest imagery I’ve ever seen put on film. #SXSW" - BDisgusting
"Thanks HEREDITARY, I never really wanted to sleep ever again anyways. This works out wonderfully." - Bballpodcast
"#Hereditary gave me multiple panic attacks. I wish I was being over-dramatic, but I’m f***ing not. When the credits started rolling. I couldn’t even f***ing move. I’m still in shock with the fact I’ve EXPERIENCED Hereditary." - Luis is @ SWSX
"You think you know what the film is about? YOU DON’T! When it really revealed its plot, the entire theater gasped & went silent in shock. I cried from drama & teared up from fear—horror & drama have not been blended together so well since The Exorcist—it’s true. #SXSW" - Matt @ SWSX

We're getting closer and closer to the release data and the hype is building with many critics calling it a masterpiece. It currently even has a 9.1/10 average rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 29 reviews (100% fresh). Other horror movies have already gotten a lot praise over the last years (It Follows, The Babadook, A Quiet Place, The Witch etc.), but to be honest I don't think any of them had the superlatives that critics are giving out now. Even with all the blockbusters coming out, this is shaping up the be my most anticipated movie this summer. I don't want to get overhyped, but the praise critics are giving director Ari Aster is unreal. A few more quotes:
"Hereditary is a game-chanching horror masterpiece. Sometimes a horror film comes along that you just feel will change the game. Ari Aster's "Hereditary" is just that movie, a spooky, hypnotic film that feels like the culmination of the last 50 years of horror." - The Playlist, A-
"A bone-chilling feature debut. Like its director, it's [Hereditary] destined to leave a mark." - The Hollywood Reporter, rave review
"We're in the presence of all time greatness." - TimeOut NY, 5/5
"By the time its final climaxes hit, you'll be shellshocked and paranoid." - io9.com, rave review
"Jaws will be dropped and cheers will be had from watching this one, which is already a frontrunner for my best of the year list." - Film Threat, 5/5
"Hereditary is graceful and relentless horror. It's a ballet of menace. Its savage suspense twisted my guts into knots and raised goosebumps so violently they ached." - Riot Material, rave review
"Few films have explored the persistent, seemingly inescapable terror of mental illness with such alarming precision." - ScreenCrush, 10/10
"Director Ari Aster assaults the senses by tapping into humanistic themes through a unique craftsmanship of tension and trauma." - Birth.Movies.Death, rave review
"Hereditary is so scary relatives five generations back will be able to sense your fear." - We Got This Covered, 9/10
"Hereditary's horror functions on multiple levels. What we see is undoubtedly terrifying, but it's how we see it that truly distinguishes the film." - Consequence of Sound, A-

Two more reviews as we get closer to its release on the 6th of June. I don't know when new screenings will take place so I'm not sure if we'll get the large wave of reviews before the 6th of June or afterwards. Either way, it's getting pretty close. "Collette is fallible, affecting and ferocious in one of her best roles for years." - 4/5, The List"The singularly most terrifying horror film in years. A film not here to play back your own worst nightmare in front of your eyes, but to render a feature-length iteration of the paranormal experience. Weeks later, you may step into a dark room, and the chilled feeling [from watching the movie] will come rushing back.", 5/5, The Independent

This one might win Best Picture this year in that case.

Honestly.... I bet it's going to be like "The Witch." One of those slow-burn type of horror movies that polarizes the audience.

Here's a list of the highest-rated horror movies of the century on Metacritic. All the bolded movies are from 2018. Climax premiered at Cannes and seems like this year's Mother!, so I expect that one to be very controversial & divisive. The Endless is an indie horror/sci-fi movie that went under the radar. I also still haven't seen it, but the trailer was very interesting.
1. Hereditary - 89 2. The Babadook - 86 3. Climax - 85 4. Under the Shadow - 84 5. Get Out - 84 6. The Witch - 83 7. Drag Me to Hell - 83 8. It Follows - 83 9. A Quiet Place - 82 10. Let the Right One In - 82
Other acclaimed horror movies:
A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night - 81 The Wailing - 81 The Endless - 80 Annihilation - 79 Green Room - 79 Shaun of the Dead - 76 28 Days Later... - 73 The Cabin in the Woods - 72

I'll definitely wait a little while though since horror movies can be unpleasant & noisy in theaters. Shouldn't be too long of a wait though with "Incredibles 2" getting released a week later.
