The more I think about this movie the better it gets. Another thing I really like is the actual meaning behind Annie's sleepwalking. While it's never directly explained, it can be assumed that the sleepwalking is due to her subconscious knowing about the presence of Paimon. It's the reason why she didn't want to have kids and the reason she tried to kill Peter while sleepwalking by burning him: her subconscious wants to prevent Paimon from being summoned. By killing Peter she removes the possible male 'vessel' for Paimon. It's also why she didn't really care about the grandma taking her daughter: Paimon wants a male body and not a female one. This is also why she freaked out when she heard she was pregnant of a boy and why she tried methods to get an abortion. I also heard a theory that goes further than this and suggests her attempts aren't caused by her subconscious, but that it's some kind of divine intervention. This theory says that her actions are caused by an attempt by a angelic presence to prevent Paimon from being summoned. In this theory Annie is overtaken by this angelic presence similar to how she's possessed by Paimon/Charlie later in the movie. This would make Annie some kind of medium through which a literal fight between good and evil is being fought. intersting theories. on the angelic one - i have trouble relating to that, the notion that divine presense would manifest through mother trying to abort or later kill her children. but i think she really was a medium as demonstrated during the super scary scene when Charlies spirit is in her and everybody is screaming.
btw the scene you mention when she stands by Peters bad and talks about how she didnt want the baby and tried to abort is is scary as fuck. not in a :jump scare: scary way but the tension and sadness and horribleness of it combined with the magnificent acting. that really stays with a person.

I thought the film was just okay. It wouldn't have received half the attention if it hadn't been for Collette's performance.

interesting, i didnt get all that with the certainty you seem to have but it makes sense. i will go and see it again for sure. btw the tongue clicking thing is one of the creepiest/scariest use of sound in horror movies in long time. well done, well done everyone. its like the opposite of asmr. I just got back from seeing this. It was a slow burn like someone mentioned, and rather than feel frustrated by that, I just went with it and was equally rewarded with some fine acting and dramatic tension. The film was depressing and disturbing and I haven't felt like this in a film for a long time. The ending though, while creepy, was also Christ like and not really that scary. I think I was so emotionally drained by the end that the end itself just didnt matter anymore. I would love to go see the film again, but I am too scared

This link is a breakdown of the story by the film-makers and actors. If I recall correctly, I think you mentioned you saw the film as a sole patron. That would have made it even more creepy. There were about 30 or so people at the session I went too. It was interesting hearing some of the reactions and comments.
just reading through that link gave me the creeps. good link though, thank you. The face of the little girl is just so scary. And yes that was an Awful scene I think particularly distressing to watch if you are a woman.
