Just saw it. Fucked up movie. I think I liked it, though. The last 10-15 minutes are terrifying. Yeah dude I was googling the mythology of Baiman and I’m pretty sure my place needs to be exorcised.

D+ Cinemascore, audiences hate it userscore on metacritic and imdb> both over 8. hardly reflection of audience hating it. the worst audience score is on RT where it is at 7.3. come on. to take the cinemascore seriously you would have to believe most people rated this as "so bad that it shouldnt have been made". Which is ridiculous. If anything, I am inclined to believe either> A] only people that had something negative to say returning the survey / you know people do that, they are more inclined to put effort into something they want to critisize rather then praise. OR B] people giving it a bad mark as a correlation to how bad the movie made them feel. yes, it makes you feel very bad. its not a "feel good" horror movie. btw I am not saying you personally say things wrong, i get that the cinemascore is what it is, but i really dont take this survey as an overall indicator of what the audience really think. i bet the movie will have a decent box office and the audience scores on online sites will remain highly positive even by users/audience.

Reading about it and sleeping on it has really improved the movie for me. It’s a pretty brilliant horror film in all honestly. Can’t wait to see it again.

Can’t wait to see it again. for me I am still thinking about the potential plot hole. will have to see it again too. And I admit I now may be a little bit in love with Alex Wolf. Who acts like that in that age? Its crazy. The director called it kamikatze style acting because of how deep he was willing to go in it. I agree. I would want a psych evaluation before during and after for that kid if I was his mother. But of course I am thankful he did it, he did an absolutely outstanding job. Those cries. Both his and Colletes. jesus. Haunting. how did you understand this so Joanie and the grandmother plotted together the whole time? or was the grandmother not in on it? Also, were they plotting the death of Charlie or was that collateral you think?

Yes it was Oscar worthy performances all around, my god. These spoilers brackets never never work for me, so warning everyone.... !SPOILER¡ yes the grandmother was the leader of the cult. And the little girl’s death was set up by the cult. She was intended to be the original host and it’s quite possible Paimon entered her before (which explains her strangeness, weird tick, etc). Ultimately she wasn’t good enough which is why they set Peter up to be the host. It seems like the grandmother was trying to make a host for Paimon for a long time. It’s implied that Toni Collete’s schizophrenic brother was intended to be the host. He hated their mother for “trying to put people inside him” and commit suicide before the ritual completed.

interesting, i didnt get all that with the certainty you seem to have but it makes sense. i will go and see it again for sure. btw the tongue clicking thing is one of the creepiest/scariest use of sound in horror movies in long time. well done, well done everyone. its like the opposite of asmr.

I think it was effective enough, but I hated the ending. Toni C. was totally Oscar worthy 7/10.

Frightening, uncomfortable, whatever other relevant adjective you want to use. Few cheap scares if any, just relies on tension, atmosphere, and man, some of those images and scenes I'll never get out of my head. Love it even more too that the trailer spoils little, if anything. Go see this weekend right? how awesome was that that it relied on tension and atmosphere. i dont even recall any cheap scares to be honest. not the typical ones anyways. and what a great job on a non spoilery trailer finally what did you think was the most powerful/scary scene? mine were
the kids ride home after he killed the sister. incredible acting incredible directing. second to that was when he was in the classroom slamming his head into the desk. third would have been when charlie was for a minute the mother and you could hear how scared she was. that was heartbreaking.
All great scenes. My favorite/scariest was The dinner scene where Toni and Alex are just letting each other have it after the "incident." Depressing and frightening all at once. Ugh, I hate the spoiler formatting too.

When the tongue clicked while the mother was driving home after the seance, my entire theater jumped I jumped out of my seat at that moment, just like everyone else. There was an elderly couple behind me and after the movie they were visibly traumatized. After the movie no one left the room for at least the first 2 minutes. Everyone was just recovering from what they had just seen, including me.

I used spoiler brackets, but just in case SPOILERS AHEAD. I've just come back from Hereditary and I'm blown away. Reminds me of The Thing in a way that it constantly keeps increasing the tension/dread even when you don't think they can take it any further. Also the moment when Annie is hiding in the roof when Peter comes down and sees his father was freaking terrifying. When I saw her in the roof in the corner of the screen I got so many chills.

Hereditary has so many fantastic little moments. Another one is when the father brakes at the last minute at the red light and he breaks down and cries. That was heartbreaking. At that moment the last person who kept on going, falls apart. Seeing this family fall apart was so sad.

The more I think about this movie the better it gets. Another thing I really like is the actual meaning behind Annie's sleepwalking. While it's never directly explained, it can be assumed that the sleepwalking is due to her subconscious knowing about the presence of Paimon. It's the reason why she didn't want to have kids and the reason she tried to kill Peter while sleepwalking by burning him: her subconscious wants to prevent Paimon from being summoned. By killing Peter she removes the possible male 'vessel' for Paimon. It's also why she didn't really care about the grandma taking her daughter: Paimon wants a male body and not a female one. This is also why she freaked out when she heard she was pregnant of a boy and why she tried methods to get an abortion. I also heard a theory that goes further than this and suggests her attempts aren't caused by her subconscious, but that it's some kind of divine intervention. This theory says that her actions are caused by an attempt by a angelic presence to prevent Paimon from being summoned. In this theory Annie is overtaken by this angelic presence similar to how she's possessed by Paimon/Charlie later in the movie. This would make Annie some kind of medium through which a literal fight between good and evil is being fought.
