Yeah, cause that's precisely what Michelinie, McFarlane, Zeck, Frenz, et al had in mind when they created sentient, super goo from another planet that bonds with a human host, can mimic any form of clothing and likes to go on deadly rampages where it kills indiscriminately. Pair that with a revenge-seeking reporter turned super-soldier who's built like a Mr. Olympia contestant and you've got a recipe for instant "grounded" cinema.
Jesus H. Christ, did people just buy the comics and seal them away in speculator bags before reading them? Lord Death Man, your post made my day!!! LOL!!!!

I just don't understand what is so wrong with fantasy, adventure or even heightened realism. Trying to make all comic book properties into "grounded" cinema detracts from the sense of wonder and awe that they can inspire. And all so that some wannabe cinema nerds won't feel ashamed discussing the latest entries in their favorite CBM franchise at the dinner table. I blame Nolan! He made some incredible superhero films, but sometimes I wish I could travel back in time and convince him to do a trilogy of romcoms instead. He coined the term "grounded reality" to describe his vision for Batman Begins. Batman Begins is only intermittently grounded and has very little to do with reality.

Meh the trailer didn't really get me anymore excited for the film than I already am. I'll be in line to see it the first week of release for sure. It does look like they're mixing Venom's origins which is honestly fine by me. Looks like it's gonna be an alien as shown by the hazmat suits and the crashed shuttle it looked like and the science team and Brock being sick and it being used as an attempt to cure cancer. I personally liked the cancer origin better.
I was hoping to see a shot of him as Venom or a reveal of who was playing Carnage but the trailer was fine. Nothing special. It had my money when Tom Hardy was cast.

The first 2 Fantastic 4s were lighthearted and had comic booky elements but people still didnt like them.

The first 2 Fantastic 4s were lighthearted and had comic booky elements but people still didnt like them. Back then the idea was that a "grounded" CBM was the only way to do (Nolan, Singer, the Raimi Spider-Man movies). No one had the courage to write and make a non-grounded CBM to outright challenge those ideas until Iron Man in 2008. The first FF movie suffered from the Incredibles coming out and them having to rewrite FF on the fly so it wouldn't look like a copycat. Then by Rise of the Silver Surfer they'd given up.

To be fair, they didn't even finish some of the effects shots. The part when Brock throws his hand out and you see workstations fly back. That's most likely going to have the symbiote tossing stuff around. Same goes for the symbiote coming out of his hospital gown when he's screaming at the end.

Nah, I think they just gave the symbiote some BS telekinetic powers in the script.

The idea of a guy building something as powerful as a nuclear reactor using scraps in a cave, the size of a fist, and then finding out that the reactor's original design was reverse engineered from an alien artifact...is not grounded.

Looks like a mature movie Doesn't mean it actually is. Compare the teaser trailer to another Sony film White House Down from 2013, the original teaser was pretty serious and dark but the trailer following it was more over-the-top and tongue-in-cheek. Teaser www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVdXl-_DvZkTrailer www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOqCN2XHCTIAmy Pascal said Venom is a comedy, that is why they hired the guy behind Zombieland to do it. Expect later trailers to highlight jokes and possible project a different tone from the teaser.

Talk about the very definition of underwhelming, its gonna have an IMAX release and there are literally no money shots? Why no reveal of Venom in his full glory? Not surprisingly a lot of people are not taking a liking to the trailer, but I figure a certain thenewnexus is not only in love with the trailer for looking "mature" because has a theory that the people who are not liking the trailer are "brainwashed" into thinking superhero movies have to be lighthearted or something. Just a Teaser, thought it was impressive enough What's impressive about it? It could've been a teaser to any other movie, you could retitle it and nobody would've guessed it was Venom.

Because it's a teaser trailer. I'm happy there's no money shot or no Venom reveal. Save the suprise for the big screen. I'm really thinking about cutting out trailers to improve my moviegoing experience because there's too much footage, revelas, money shots, crowd pleasing moments spoiled etc... This teaser was great. Being a teaser trailer doesn't mean they can't have at least one money shot of Venom in action.
