that's all we can ask for sometimes, just some semblance of normalcy.
I can empathize, but not really sympathize.
IF your child can not control themselves.........it's not your fault, it's not the child's fault........but it is your responsibility to be respectful of others.
So, sorry, but little joy of your life defective kid doesn't get the pleasure of that normalcy......because they're not normal anyway.
I don't think it's too much to ask to make arrangements for someone else to watch your kid while you go out to dine once in a great while.
It's a factor in the poor educational scores in the US, too imo............when you insist that every other kid gets to suffer because your kid needs to be in the 'normal' environment...... then all you're doing is dragging everyone else down. Teachers have a tough enough job as it is.

true but we're not talking school. we're talking rl. in rl there are people of all types and as long as they aren't harming anyone, i let them be.
i think some special kids know when they are shunned and unwanted. i will stand up for them and give them my dessert!

But they are harming others. Maybe not physically.......... but they're certainly ruining a meal/experience that they paid for.
How is a restaurant much different than a movie theater? (I stopped going to theaters years ago because apparently even the normal people couldn't refrain from opening their yaps non-stop)
In a way I'm looking forward to being a bit older and just appearing disabled or 'out of touch'.......cuz then everyone MUST feel sorry for me and whomever I'm with and I'll be able to say and do whatever I'd like without fear of offending anyone. It'll be good times, right? Well, maybe not for everyone else.

What would everyone say if this were a 60-year old adult with this neurological disorder?

i still share my ice cream with him and i'll share my ice cream with you.
otherwise, we shall agree to disagree to enduring the unendurable even for 30 minutes.

my mom's dad unfortunately has a stroke young. and became an old grumpy man almost instantly.
we still took him everywhere with us even if he did drool a bit and could be loud.
i mean he's family, what else can you do?
many east asians don't have a 'leave him/her home alone while we go celebrate' mode.
we may be cheap and arrogant but we do respect our elders regardless.

I would say the same.
Standards must remain.
Although, I am considering bringing an canned airhorn with me wherever I go now. If there are no longer any expectations of a reasonable and acceptable level of sound and annoyance, then nobody should be able to complain, right?

I have to believe the posters that are saying leave the kid at home or that the parents shouldn't be taking such a kid out have mental disorders of their own. I'm guessing they're autistic. If not, maybe they're the ones who should be staying home if loudness somehow interferes with food going into their mouths.

Stay there and endure, and blame Trump.

Don't play dumb. I was all the way out here in California and heard about Muslims celebrating on 9/11 in New York at the time. Nothing beats second-hand unsubstantiated anecdata...

Or the other option....
BLAME CANADA!
Honestly, I would endure it. It's something that they can't help.

It's like my wife says about witty comebacks.......... never as handy and there when you really need them.
Of course, she tends to screw up joke telling, so it's probably best if she doesn't adopt your Cabbage Plan, too

when my kids were infants, we'd get up and leave if they were past the fussy stage.

A good time for that razor-wire garrote hidden in your Rolex Oyster Perpetual Watch, Bond. Use your Walther PPK to ventilate any opposition and zip-line from the roof to your Aston-Martin, and you should have time to rendezvous with a proper martini and shag a bit of crumpet before elevensies.

Probably #2, though this scenario has never actually happened to me.
