SMHC suffered quite a backlash on those forums not filled with MCU fanatics. That is likely bc it was essentially a re-regurgitation of previous films and seemed more like a TV pilot with some shoehorned-in MCU cameos. But it is still the best "MCU" film this year vis-a-vis the substance-less joke fests Raccoon turd Vol2 and ThorFraggleRock. Spidey maintained at least some heart from Sony plus a decent villain (weaker than previous ones, but still a great one for MCU). Just wait for the backlash Thor: Fragglerock will face when the hype dies down and the jokes get old...a la "sensitive nipples" and "I have famously huge turds"... I actually thought the jokes were better in Thor: Ragnarok than Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2. A lot of that had to do with Taika Waititi being a better comedy director than James. no contest, they were better, it is difficult for me to find the new "sensitive nipples", "famous huge turds"/"put a squishy turd in your pillow", "create a penis" "Im Mary Poppins, y'all", "that little scruffy puppy is sooo cute, I'm gonna die" etc in Thor- FraggleRock.

"Create a penis" wasn't a joke line, it was someone asking the reasonable question of how the avatar of a living planet could reproduce with someone.

It definitely wasn't as cringey as the "famous huge turds", "sensitive nipples", and a few other jokes that didn't land. But I can see why some may have found it to be lame.

It's serious dialogue a la Marvel. Here for your enlightenment the full thing in all it deep, investigative glory:

How WOULD an avatar of a living planet be able to reproduce with someone if they're just an astral projection? The movie answered it. Easy as that. And that last bit by Ego shows that maybe some of Star-Lord's personality is genetic.

Guess it's a pity they did not discuss squishy turds, I could not imagine what reasonable question Drax would have to ask in that regard...

I think a lot of these people who say there's too much humor aren't realizing that these are things that might actually be asked or said or done in those situations. I find all of the humor to be appropriate. Some of it may not be the funniest thing ever, but the vast majority are great and is a joke not being my favorite joke really something I need to bitch about on a message board?

I just saw it this afternoon despite almost asking for a refund and leaving because we were forced to stay in the lobby for nearly 30 minutes after showtime because the theater needed to be cleaned. Went to a 4 pm showtime and wasn't seated until 4:30ish and then was given a speech by an employee for no reason and the movie didn't start until about 4:50 because of 3 movie trailers that I don't really care to see (Justice League, Star Wars, Black Panther) so luckily I didn't have anywhere to really be but damn I felt like that was gonna hurt my enjoyment of the movie because I was already going in pissed off. But ANYWAYS, I say it was good/great. I'd give it a solid 8/10. It was better than GOTG 2 but not as good as Spider-Man Homecoming for me. Spider-Man being my favorite comic book movie of the year and will undoubtedly end up that way considering I think Justice League looks horrible.
I did have some issues with it but they weren't nearly the big issues I thought I'd have going into the film.
Cons:
- The wailing screams for Thor for comedy weren't really needed at all.
- Once again we have two hero's fighting each other that ends without either one of them really winning. I really wanted to see Thor beat Hulk but I felt robbed of that.
- No Sif...like I'm glad she wasn't shown dead so she COULD return maybe but I miss Sif.
- Odin's death. Like what the hell was that? He just poof turns into dust. Missed opportunity in my mind for Hela to kill him.
- Some of it's comedy bits fell flat with me. Hated the "friend from work" thing ever since the first trailer. Thor hitting himself in the face with the ball. Most of Banner's stuff like him adjusting himself because "Tony wears tight pants" had my eyes rolling. Nothing as bad as some of GOTG2 comedy attempts though. While I enjoyed that movie I agree that the "comedy" aspects of that movie missed. Mostly anything Drax related there.
- Didn't HATE it but did we really need the Doctor Strange cameo? Felt like it was forced in there to make the credits scene from Dr Strange work.
Now to the good parts.
Pros:
- Thor actually kicking some ass in this movie. Loved it when he got the "Odin-Force" power up and just started whooping ass. Felt like I haven't seen Thor like that since the opening of the first Thor film where he's fighting the Ice Giants.
- Loki of course is just always great.
- Just the right amount of Hulk. Going into this film I was not thrilled that he was going to be in this film and I worried that he'd steal the focus away from Thor in what possibly is his final solo film. The trailers didn't help in that when the final shots were of Hulk going after Surtur. In the story of the film though it worked. Just had me nervous going into it. So yeah, just the right amount of Hulk.
- Hela was awesome. Definitely got a Cersei Lannister vibe from her which is never a bad thing for a hated villain.
- Korg was surprisingly funny. I kept hearing how Taika Waititi voicing this character was one of the best parts of the movie so all the hype I was hearing in that regard had me thinking I'd hate it but I didn't. He indeed was funny.
- Matt Damon. Like WHAT?! I had to double take at that. I was like "wait, that can't be Matt Damon can it?" "HOLY SHIT THAT'S MATT DAMON!" Once knowing that I tried to figure out who was playing Thor but couldn't figure it out til I saw the credits on IMDB and it's Luke Hemsworth. Nice touch there haha.
- No Jane Foster
- Not too much time spent on Earth like the previous 2 films. I wanted to see other worlds and for the film to have a real focus on Asgard and I felt like I got that.
- GREAT use of music in this film.
- Most of the comedy worked for me here. While it was dumb I did laugh pretty good at Banner failing to turn into Hulk in time before he hit the bridge. Was unexpected for me.

Also am I the only one that once figuring out that it was Matt Damon thought to himself, this is how Matt Damon finally gets to force Jimmy Kimmel into seeing a movie he's in by surprising him that he's in it? That'd be a funny sketch on Kimmel's show I think.

Yeah I mentioned in my Pros part of my original reaction post to the movie. I knew the other actors were likely somebody too but couldn't figure it out until I looked them up on imdb when I got home. Was a great touch for the guy playing Thor to be Luke. The Sam Neill part caught me by surprise because I was under the assumption that he was Surtur's voice.

Fandral drew his sword and approached her. And? Did he attack? Do he brandish the sword at her? Fandral drew his sword and approached her. If I pulled out a gun a walked toward you, would you think I was going to sell you cookies?

The thing I liked about the humor is that a lot of it was stuff that was playing off expectations. You knew about Hulk jumping out of a helicopter and turning into the Hulk from The Incredible Hulk. It's a thing and it should have happened. When it didn't... Oh man. lol Same with Thor soothing Hulk and Valkyrie's entrance.

A logical question to ask. If Star Trek had them encounter a living planet and then found out that somehow he had kids, you can bet that Mr Spock or Data would've asked how such a thing was possible. I think it's the source. Like you said about Star Trek, if it was any other movie asking that question it would be okay. But since it is the MCU, it's unnecessary comedy. The thing I notice is that a lot of exposition is found in the humor moments. You have people on here talking about plot holes, but miss the explanation because they wrote off a scene for having "jokes" in it.

Amazing. Easily the most fun I've had with an MCU film.

He didn't just approach her. He tried to hack her with it. After she killed the fat guy, Fandral drew his sword and attacked her. She blocked it and killed him.
