You cannot use stats to prove who is the best. Stats can be misleading. You have to use your eyes I used accomplishments first, accolades second, stats third. Personal opinions come in at a distant forth. Montana was better than Brady. I have no doubt of that.

i think the more interesting debate at this point is team wise - i.e. who was the greatest 'franchise qb' of all-time....
i.e.
favre/rodgers montana/young
and so on down the list....
may seem easy but i'm sure we have our hardcore old school nuts here who rank Bradshaw over Roethlisberger and Staubach over Aikman.........

By ignoring the fact that Tom Brady wins every single* matchup with Joe Montana, you win the distant 4th place opinion award!* Every. Single. One.

Is it possible that Montana won fewer mvps because the caliber of his peers was better than Brady & Manning? I think it tells us that the separation between Montana and his peers was not as great as that of Brady/Manning and their peers. He was just another one of those QBs who peaks for a year or two, drops off, and gets traded. It’s not a stat ... at least, I’m not using it as one. It’s an accomplishment. The ultimate achievement.

I want a QB that can get my team to the big game as often as possible, throughout a long and productive career ... put them in a position to win all of them ... and take home the bacon, more often than not.

That's actually a fascinating query, considering as a Patriots fan who still prefers the Drew Bledsoe video game stats as David v NFL Goliaths to the Brady machine will attest. Dan Marino has to be the #1 franchise QB I think. That's saying something because guy never won a title with a franchise with 2 SB rings including 17-0, & he's still in 20 f'n 18 the face of the franchise.

In today’s NFL, Drew Brees puts up 5,000 yards every year, and while he is legitimately great, Stafford and Roethlisberger have done it as well and others came close. Nobody did what Marino did while he was playing. Fouts came close but that’s about it. Marino was essentially Ted Williams - every great stat except the only one that mattered. I blame whoever constructed those Dolphin teams.

I want a QB who won't get his ass kicked by an inferior team in the Super Bowl, "not 1, not 2," but 3 TIMES!!!
3 TIMES!!! Think about that!!! 3 TIMES Brady had a superior team in the Super Bowl and choked away the championship. To lose on the game's biggest stage to an inferior team 3 TIMES!!! That's just unfathomable!!!
Montana never lost a Super Bowl. Jordan never lost an NBA Finals. LeBron lost 5 NBA Finals, but only 1 of those 5 losses was to an inferior team. Brady lost the Super Bowl to an inferior team 3 TIMES!!!

You being a Cowboys fan, I can see how that would be a step up from your current situation.

Joe Montana, and I say this while rooting against him most of his career, was the best QB I have ever seen. No doubt. Agreed. I rooted against Montana in every game that he played for the 49ers. But as much as I hate to admit it, when it comes to NFL QBs, Montana was the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be. For someone who can predict the future, you sure are wrong a lot of the time. How old will you be when you lose your virginity? Will it be to Catherine Keener?

There's no shame in losing to a superior team. If LeBron loses the NBA Finals to Golden State, there's no shame because Golden State is the superior team. But losing the Super Bowl to an inferior team that you should've beaten 3 TIMES is just shameful and unfathomable and no QB can ever be in the conversation for GOAT after getting his butt kicked in the Super Bowl by an inferior team 3 TIMES.

Stop saying that Brady lost three times to inferior teams. The Eagles were clearly the superior team and beat them with their backup quarterback. They executed better. Pederson proved he belonged there. The entire NFC was stronger than the AFC. So while Vegas thought the Pats were superior, they clearly weren’t. The only time that Pats lost to an inferior team was the 18-1 year.

I wouldn't have thought the 9-7 Giants who went 2-0 against the Pats in SBs were particularly strong. Agree on the Eagles though. Clearly the best team with the most depth.
