Since we don't have a promo video or even a title for the first episode of season 8, I almost forgot about the episode discussion threads I always made 1 week before the episode. Thanks to Aj_June to remind me. I'll of course update this post when more details about the episode are revealed and I'll add a poll to rate the episode after it airs. There's pretty much no news at all about episode 1, they're really strict about everything: no promo videos and not even a second trailer for season 8. I guess they know we'll watch it anyways, so they don't have to show us a lot. What are your expectations of episode 1?
At least we know who directs the episode: David Nutter. He also directs episodes 2 and 4 of this season. Episodes 3 & 5 are directed by Miguel Sapochnik and the final episode is directed by David Benioff & D.B. Weiss. David Nutter has already directed 6 episodes of Game of Thrones and is often considered to be the best Game of Thrones director for the dramatic (non-battle) episodes. This makes it easy to see why they decided to bring him back for the final season. And with only 3 directors (Counting David Benioff & D.B. Weiss as 1), this season will probably feel a lot more cohesive than the other seasons in terms of direction. David Nutter has already directed The Old Gods and the New, A Man Without Honor, the infamous The Rains of Castamere, Mhysa, The Dance of Dragons and Mother's Mercy. He has also directed many other acclaimed episodes of other shows, including Out of Time, Tricksters & Fast Enough for The Flash S1 and multiple episodes of Entourage & The X Files. He also directed an episode of the highly acclaimed mini-series Band of Brothers. The episode is written by Dave Hill. He has only written 3 Game of Thrones episodes so far: The Sons of the Harpy, Home & Eastwatch. From the newer seasons I especially consider Eastwatch to be one of the best written episodes, so I'm excited to see if he brings anything special to the table. Episode 2 will be written by Bryan Cogman, who has already written excellent episodes like Kissed by Fire, What is Dead May Never Die & The Laws of Gods and Men. The final 4 episodes are written by David Benioff & D.B. Weiss. So far the creators have written many episodes including And Now His Watch Is Ended, The Rains of Castamere, Two Swords, The Mountain and the Viper, The Children, Hardhome, Mother's Mercy, The Door, Battle of the Bastards, The Winds of Winter, The Spoils of War & The Dragon and The Wolf.
