If The Dark Knight didn't get best picture, than no way in hell will Wonder Woman. Back in the 2008 award year, the Academy nominated only 5 movies for Best Picture. Because The Dark Knight was snubbed for an Oscar nomination, the Academy increased the number of movies nominated for Best Picture to 10 movies starting with the 2009 award year. That's why there's more of a chance that Wonder Woman (which has received ratings as high as The Dark Knight did) will be nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture.

why would the Oscars just all of a sudden decide to include a superhero film after ignoring some of the greatest superhero films and roles in the past. Spider-Man 2, one of the greatest ever, both as a film and superhero film. Even Alfred Molina's Doc OC's portrayal are easily worthy of an Oscar nomination. X2-X-Men United, hell and Ian McKellen's performance as Magneto. It's one of the strongest superhero performance on par with Ledger's Joker. Because when Spider-Man 2 and X2: X-Men United were released, superhero movies still were considered to be just entertainment for kids and nerds and not serious movies for all audiences. Back then, there were just a handful of superhero movies. The Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, and X-Men movies were the major ones and there were a few minor ones (e.g. Swamp Thing, Supergirl, The Punisher, Daredevil, and Hulk). But in 2008, The Dark Knight changed the perception of superhero movies. The Dark Knight showed that superhero movies can be more than just entertainment for kids and nerds and can be serious movies. Wonder Woman isn't as serious as The Dark Knight but what Wonder Woman does better than any other superhero movie that has ever been made is having the right balance between the lighter moments and more serious moments (something which MCU movies still haven't figured out how to do right after 15 movies) by showing the horrors and brutality of a world war without trivializing it with jokes and 1-liners. And Wonder Woman (which is the 1st CBM ever to be a hit among young and old, male and female) has also proven that CBMs can be for all audiences. And like I said in in a previous post, the Golden Globes last year nominated a CBM for Best Picture for the 1st time ever ( Deadpool, although that was for a Comedy category). So the Academy may be ready this year to nominate a CBM for Best Picture for the 1st time ever. And if the Academy is going to nominate a CBM for Best Picture for the 1st time ever, they're not going to nominate just any CBM; they're going to want to choose a CBM like Wonder Woman that's not only a universal hit with all audiences but also has the potential for a large lasting impact on the industry.

That's a pathetic excuse by Marvel fans to try to discredit Heath Ledger and The Dark Knight. That's as pathetic as the Democrats trying to suggest that the Russians tampered with the Presidential election. Whether or not the Russians might have hacked crooked Hillary's e-mails or spread other propaganda, unless there's clear evidence that any actual votes were changed by the Russians, then no one can say for sure that the reason people voted for Trump over crooked Hillary because of the Russians. And unless you have an admission from a majority of Academy voters that they voted for Ledger only because his co-stars advocated for it, then you can't say for sure that they voted for Ledger because of that and not because Ledger really was the best that year. LOL!!! You're saying that RDJ should've won the Oscar over Sean Penn's portrayal of Harvey Milk, who was San Francisco's 1st gay supervisor and was assassinated? RDJ's performance was nothing close to Sean Penn's performance in Milk or Heath Ledger's performance in The Dark Knight and certainly nothing close to Oscar-worthy. I never said Wonder Woman would win the Oscar for Best Picture. On the contrary, I've said that Wonder Woman probably won't win the Oscar for Best Picture because the Academy is probably not ready yet to award the Oscar for Best Picture to a CBM. But with 10 movies being nominated for Best Picture (instead of only 5 like in 2008, when The Dark Knight was snubbed for an Oscar nomination), I think Wonder Woman has a great chance to receive the Academy's 1st Best Picture nomination for a CBM. Last year, the Golden Globes nominated a CBM for Best Picture for the 1st time ever (Deadpool, although that was in the Comedy category) so this year the Academy may be ready to nominated a CBM for Best Picture for the 1st time ever. And if the Academy is going to nominate a CBM for Best Picture for the 1st time ever, they're not going to nominate just any CBM; they're going to want to choose a CBM like Wonder Woman that's not only a universal hit with all audiences but also has the potential for a large lasting impact on the industry. The Wolverine doesn't appeal to female audiences. So that's 1/2 of the viewing audience that The Wolverine doesn't appeal to. In this Indirewire piece by Anne Thompson, the author predicts that Gal Gadot and Chris Pine will get nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor based on the Academy's penchant for inclusion. Sure, nobody said that the film would win an Oscar, but there certainly is talk about the film getting Oscar consideration. Great article! I agree that an Oscar win is unlikely for a CBM, but (after the Golden Globes last year nominated a CBM for Best Picture for the 1st time ever) an Oscar nomination in a major category (e.g. Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor) is certainly possible for Wonder Woman.
I think a Best Director Oscar nomination is pretty likely for Patty Jenkins. She did an excellent job of balancing the lighter moments (Diana and Steve talking on the boat ride to London, Diana shopping for civilian clothes, Diana and Steve dancing in the snow) with the more serious moments (the horror and brutality of a world war - injured soldiers with amputated limbs and women and children killed by poisonous gas). That's something that MCU still hasn't figured out how to do right after 15 movies. If Wonder Woman were an MCU movie, there would've been plenty of jokes and 1-liners during the No Mans Land scene, which would trivialized the scene and turned it into a joke.
Jenkins also did an excellent job of using contrast - showing the beauty of Themyscira with its cascading waterfalls vs the dreary, smoke-filled skies of London. Even the beach battle - the Amazons with their ancient weapons of war (bows and arrows and swords) vs the German soldiers with their more modern rifles.
And excellent point about inclusion. The Academy recently took a lot of criticism for its lack of diversity in their nominations. Now the Academy has an opportunity to nominate the 1st successful female-led CBM, which is also directed by a female Director, for Best Picture.

It was a damn good movie, it would be deserving of an Academy Award nomination. It's a step in the right direction for female led CBMs Yes, Wonder Woman not only opens the door for more female-led CBMs but also could open the door for many more opportunities for female directors to direct big-budget movies. Male directors who have never directed a big-budget movie often get hired to direct big-budget movies without anyone questioning their lack of experience directing big-budget movies, but female directors hardly ever get that opportunity. WB gave Patty Jenkins that opportunity and she delivered 1 of the best CBMs ever and certainly better than any of MCU's movies. Jenkins' success on Wonder Woman could open the door for female directors to be given some of the same opportunities that male directors are often handed.

No, it just got lucky there wasn't much competition around and Heath Ledger's you-know-what made it considered bad taste to properly critique the film.

Its not a masterpiece, hardly original, very generic is some places, especially the villain. Nothing speaks Best Picture out of that. You can keep telling yourself all this, but Ledger basically only got the Oscar because he OD'd by accident and was recommended by his costars. Not saying he didn't deserve it or anything, but if Logan (which is more groundbreaking for cbm than Wonder Woman) isn't even nominated for Best Picture or Best Actor (for Hugh Jackman because this was by far his strongest performance as the Wolverine), then it just confirms that the Oscars aren't looking at superhero films and The Dark Knight was an exception because Ledger died.

Nolan himself has admitted this fact and a lot of critics also say the x-men movies were the first comic films for grown ups. why else do you think x-men fans dont want x-men in the mcu? As much as I adored and loved BB and TDK, X2 is also placed on the same level even having a more darker, gritter and serious tone to TDK. As for the Oscars they wont over do it. if any movie would be nominated for best picture it would be Logan. its a better contender than wonder woman. wonder woman is a great super hero film but logan is more than just a great superhero film. its a great western, its a great drama story and the oscars loves that. Grace Randolph, I think made the best analysis for the oscars, and she said Logan is the best choice for best picture, she would love to see logan get best picture and the director of wonder woman (pat jenkins) get best director nomination.so I think that is fair and it will make everyone happy...especially x-men and DC fan bases.

FoX-Men fans don't want the X-Men in the MCU because that would mean the villains would no longer be the stars of the show, the characters would wear costumes, they'd do more than just that "poor oppressed Mutants" plotline over and over, and finally the Mutants would no longer be the center of the Universe.
That's why.
And Nolan only said he was inspired by the X-Movies because at the time the X-Movies were in the mainstream, it was free publicity. If Iron Man came out before Batman Begins he'd have said he was inspired by Iron Man.
The X-Movies are partially responsible for the idea that the "grounded" way is the only way to go, which is totally wrong-headed. So for that, I've never fully accepted them.

Depending on how you really define grounded and how its used to describe a film, i.e. dark/serious, stuff like that, the first Blade film is often overlooked, but it really kinda started the serious CBM trend.

2nd, the 2nd thing that you keep choosing to forget is that I'm not the one who's hyping Wonder Woman for an Oscar nomination. Several websites have posted articles mentioning the possibility of Wonder Woman being nominated for an Oscar nomination. So your accusations that I'm biased are wrong since other websites have basically stated the same thing I've been saying - that Wonder Woman is a strong possibility for an Oscar contender.

LOGAN has earned universal praise for its impact on the genre's longevity! It brought serious drama and strong characterizations in a very realistic manner, even proving that using other themes ( such as the western) can raise the credibility of a superhero movie. Take out his mutancy or that of his clone daughter - and the drama of the story still holds very strong appeal. The emotional appeal of his relationships with his foster father ( Prof Xavier) and his daughter (X-23/Laura) evolved very strongly in the storytelling...Translating the chrome movie into a film noir version even raises the emotional quotient of the movie. It was never the intention to give it an R-rating for its sake -- it was using a mature theme which injected realism in a violent setting which led to an R-rating. The bonus were the extraordinary performances of Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart and Dafne Keen!
It was one of the studio heads ( New Warner Bros top honcho Toby Emmerich) who said, in a Variety article, that LOGAN has paved the way for the genre to step into more realistic and serious territory. What may be interesting for Jackman is that he has a forthcoming movie musical called THE GREATEST SHOWMAN ( which FOX presented for its finale slate at the CinemaCon in Las Vegas and at CineEurope, at conventions of theater distributors) which is also being tipped for serious Oscar glory ( check out Hollywood Elsewhere by Jeffrey Wells).
Whichever movie or performance gets the nod of the awards community, this will be a groundbreaking year for Jackman, with each movie demonstrating his talent and versatility. Both movies are passion projects for him.
And who is the unsung hero for LOGAN - it is James Mangold whose body of work continues to impress. He is a true and dedicated film-maker! Hope he gets the recognition from the Oscars and the Directors Guild (DGA)!

Re previous comments on Jackman's fan appeal -- he is not just popular with the 4 quadrants -- but have you ever checked how his movie REAL STEEL has made fans of the very, very young moviegoers ( maybe around 5 years and a little older)? I have seen so many tweets from Moms saying their kids like to watch the DVD version again and again and again! And this is not surprising -- there is constant appeal for Shawn Levy and Jackman to do a sequel of the much-loved movie. Also, Fandango once ran a survey of its ticketbuyers for a Jackman-led XMen movie - their stats showed that more than 50% of ticket buyers were female! So, that certainly proves that there are many female fans of Wolverine and of Jackman as Wolverine! And if you see the fan demos at a premiere of a Wolverine-led XMen movie - again, the female side are more than just adequately represented! And if you ever had a chance to see Jackman perform on Broadway -- check out his stagedoor before and after the show! LOL - the males can get run over by the female fans. Also, I once stood on the queue waiting to be let in to the theatre in a drama called A STEADY RAIN ( with Jackman and Daniel Craig as rogue policemen). One guy laughed out loud -- "In this long queue, why am I the only male out of maybe 20-30 women waiting to see Jackman?!!". His female fanbase does include the Moms and the Grandmas, too -- not just the young female fans. Famous Broadway (and occasional movies) songstress diva Barbara Cook was a regular sight at Hugh's shows -- she was even distributing confetti to be thrown to the stage for the closing night of Hugh's best-known Broadway show ( The Boy from Oz) ... Judge Judy once bid $ 25,000 for a Broadway charity and the prize was a Jackman t-shirt ( complete with DNA) worn in the show by and auctioned off after the show by Jackman... And, once, I even saw one tall and beautiful blonde lady come out of the stagedoor after one performance of a Jackman musical show -- her name is Ivanka So, Jackman has an across-the-board appeal! Not just into the four-quadrants! But also into different genres ( action/drama/musicals/sci-fi/romcom/animation). He can even act as a villain (PAN and CHAPPIE)! And his talent appeal is certainly proven on both film and stage! One can probably draw a VENN diagram of his professional career diversity and one can see how he adapts to each genre and each performing medium in such a big way. But one fan did shout out in the theatre in one Broadway show (The Boy from Oz) where he clearly did not approve Jackman, as gay songwriter Peter Allen, starting to kiss his boyfriend : "Wolverine, NOOOOOOOOOOO!" LOL! He is indeed very versatile and can portray many different characters and many different layers to a singular character! From James Howlett to Wolverine to LOGAN!

First Avenger and the MCU's success as a whole along with films like TDK in all fairness are why these movies are worth more now. It's in no way an indication that it's a better film. That's absurd.
And yes I read the article, but I could write an article on why First Avenger is the better film, so I don't know why you think that one article is the end of the argument.
Because, you asked for a reason why Wonder Woman was better. The article listed 15. End of argument. It just goes to show the hypocrisy of biased MCU fans like ArArArchStanton. Last year when there were several articles on the Internet saying that Civil War was a better film than BvS, all the MCU fanboys like ArArArchStanton were posting links to those articles and using it as their "proof" that Civil War was better than BvS.
Now that there are several articles on the Internet saying that Wonder Woman is a better film than Captain America: The First Avenger, MCU fanboys like ArArArchStanton want to dismiss those articles and refuse to accept that Wonder Woman is a better film than Captain America: The First Avenger. Such hypocrisy by MCU fans!

Actually I can. Wonder Woman has a higher RT score (i.e. more critics thought it was fresh) than "Captain America: the First Avenger" - Wonder Woman even has a better audience score, it also had a better opening weekend, and (unlike any Marvel film) it was screened before members of the Academy (for award consideration). That has got to mean something if not better than Captain America. RT works only when all MCU movies are fresh, and all DCEU rotten. Now that WW is in top 3 averages for Superhero movies, it doesn't matter. Like it doesn't matter that no MCU movie is in top 3 That actually works both ways... RT didn't matter when all DCEU was rotten, now it has a good movie, RT matters... Make up your minds. WW deserves the praise the other ones are shit. This from a guy that always looked up to Supes and Bats. Not these abominations they put on film.
