Judas Priest released Invincible Shield 2 months ago, in early March. Not bad, but probably not as good as 2014's Redeemer of Souls, and certainly not as good as 2018's Firepower.

Judas Priest released Invincible Shield 2 months ago, in early March. Not bad, but probably not as good as 2014's Redeemer of Souls, and certainly not as good as 2018's Firepower. I saw Judas Priest on their "Invincible Shield" tour exactly a week ago, as noted here and here. They played "Panic Attack", "Crown of Horns", and the title track, from their new album at the show. So far, I have yet to listen to the "Invincible Shield" album in its entirety. The main reason I put it on the back burner is that I compile MP3 CDs to listen to in my car. When completing my latest compilation (mostly 2022 and 2023 albums), I only had enough room for one album of about 42 minutes. And depending on which edition you buy, "Invincible Shield" is either 52:32 or 01:03:33. So, I went shopping for a shorter album, and instead purchased "Savage Dawn" from IRON CURTAIN (clocking in at just over 38 minutes). The second reason I have yet to listen to the "Invincible Shield" album in its entirety, is that, as you noted, it's simply not as compelling as "Firepower". That 2018 release, metaphorically speaking, grabbed me by the throat and said, "You will buy this album." By contrast, "Invincible Shield", metaphorically speaking, waved at me and said, "Hi, I'm a new Priest album, maybe you'd like to buy me." And my response has been, "Yeah, maybe, I'll get back to you on that."

Yeah, I saw them a couple days ago and they performed those same songs from the new album. I must admit that although I initially wasn't that impressed with "Panic Attack", it has grown on me. As for the title track, is it just me, or was anyone else reminded of "Too Bad to Be True" by OZ from 1984?

I assume cars nowadays would also take a USB stick to read music from. You're probably correct that new cars would be able to read music from a USB stick, but my car that doesn't offer that option. Also, my car is not the only place where I listen to music. Another key location is my basement where I have my stereo equipment and my exercise equipment. I listen to the new CDs I buy down there while I work out. A USB stick is not an option there either. Finally, I think it's important to support the bands you love by purchasing their albums - particularly those young, up-and-coming bands that will carry on the tradition when the originators of this style, like Priest, are no longer with us. For example, in my 2023 album thread, I featured Nightwolf, who in their own words are a "Brazilian Heavy Metal band influenced by Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Accept, Dio, and many others." I believe that any fan of Judas Priest would love Nightwolf. I knew after literally two seconds, that I was listening to something special. I have reproduced the relevant portion of my 2023 album thread below. NIGHTWOLF - The Cult of the Wolfwww.youtube.com/watch?v=Dubb9eM18WE (Sample Song) www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kCBDQdHAyiqs_5gX0hsUQMBBa4k3pirlw (Full Album Playlist) Country of origin: Brazil, Formed in: 2017, Genre: Heavy Metal For more information: www.metal-archives.com/bands/Nightw%C3%B6lf/3540463911Reviewer Neil Arnold at Metal Forces Magazine gave "The Cult of the Wolf" an 8.5/10 rating and wrote:

Finally, I think it's important to support the bands you love by purchasing their albums If you want to support an artist, send them money in the most direct way possible. If they sell downloads on their own website, that's the way to go. Buying a CD or any sort of physical merchandise supports the retailing, shipping and manufacturing industry, leaving the artist with just a fraction.

The artist may not get as much this way, but I vastly prefer acquiring new music in the CD format. I might have a theoretical point. I went to the Judas Priest official site and could not find a way of buying music without some physical packaging. I went to another band and found the same. It appears the "support the artist" argument is a feelgood excuse for people who like to collect shiny things with the name of their favourites on them. If it weren't, there would be a way of just "supporting the artist" without paying the postman and cluttering shelves. I can buy the mp3 album from Amazon for 10.99€ and the CD for 17.97€. I suppose the band could (maybe) get a better cut of my money from the mp3 so there is at least that possibility but I don't find this option at my old online CD store, which only sells physical media. It seems to imply that downloads don't sell enough to bother offering them. The music market has become a merchandise market.

Judas Priest released Invincible Shield 2 months ago, in early March. Not bad, but probably not as good as 2014's Redeemer of Souls, and certainly not as good as 2018's Firepower. I haven't heard any of these. The title track is boring, melodic 80s metal. It feels like listening to some early Malmsteen album. And it goes on forever. The next one, "Devil in Disguise" is the same snooze. Panic Attack: synth intro, what the Hell? Riff, drums... and yet another hummable thing. Nothing happening. Drummer raving up at random. This one's going to explode sometime too. Guitars guitaring around. Everything's completely predictable. The Serpent and the King starts better. There's some metal in this. Some progression in tension too. Nothing too crazy and there's some silly melodic bridge. Half good. Gates of Hell: sounds like generic 80s metal again. Def Leppard anyone? Nah, I'm joking, never listened to them past the first album and even that was nothing I would have bought. Crown of Thorns: oh no. What is this now? Some pop song played louder? As God is my Witness: back to metal. For 50s. Then's it's another Malmsteen song. Fuck off Priest. I never cared much for them anyway. I was more the Sabbath type.

NIGHTWOLF - The Cult of the Wolf I like these. They remind me a bit of early Helloween, before they got all melodic, major mode cartoon. Too bad it's all about wolves, though

My inaugural 2024 purchase was Heavy/Speed Metal from Spain with a thirty-eight minute runtime. By an astonishing coincidence (or perhaps not), my second 2024 album is also Heavy/Speed Metal from Spain with a thirty-eight minute runtime. But this time it's a debut album, namely "Night Stealer" by SAVAGED. MetalMike at The Metal Crypt gives the album 4.75/5 and wrote: I've linked to a sample SAVAGED song, and also their entire 2024 album, in the first post of this thread.

My latest 2024 purchase is "Beyond the Bells" by SCAVENGER. The band formed forty years ago, but this is only their second full-length album, and the first one I've bought. By an astonishing coincidence (or perhaps not) this was released on No Remorse Records, the same label as my previous purchase, "Night Stealer" by SAVAGED. MetalMike at The Metal Crypt gives the album a 4.5/5 rating and writes: I've linked to a sample SCAVENGER song, and also their entire 2024 album, in the first post of this thread.
