For now, I think there are there are more TV shows at a higher quality than there are movies. Not only are you seeing television with better production value than ever, you're seeing it frequently too. But there are too few such good production and too much insipid, unoriginal writing. Plus, and this is what really bothers me, there seems to be a dumbing-down of the audience. So-called comedies like That 70s Show and The Big Bang Theory, crammed with obvious laugh tracks, aren't funny. They're written predictably, sophomorically, and just plain badly. I apologize for offending some here, but the truth is the truth. You sound extremely high and mighty and well... wrong. There's really not much of a debate when it comes to dramas. The case can be made for sitcoms (picking one of the more popular and successful sitcoms of the modern era doesn't really help your argument though), but certainly not dramas. Even the "trashy" stuff today is really good. Bates Motel is essentially a soap opera; it revolves around sex, drugs, and murder. It's also extremely well done. But the real serious good stuff? Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, Rectify, The Americans, and so much more. Hell, Colony is "just" the average run-of-the-mill sci-fi show (plot wise), but it is extremely well executed. Truth? Far from it as far as I'm concerned.

Can I say it's gotten both better and worse. There are so many more choices than there used to be, so there are a lot more good shows, and a lot more bad shows. In my opinion, the good outweigh the bad. I can come to places like this and get recommendations on what to watch, and what to skip. There was no Game of Thrones, Walking Dead (which is very hit or miss, but come on, compare it to shows in the 80s or 90s), Vikings, People. Vs., Fargo.....There was nothing on TV that resembled these shows. Sure, you have crap like Big Bang, That 70's show, Kevin Can Wait...but you had more of those in the 80s/90s. There is only one show from that time period that I have rewatched; X-Files. Hands Down, better I couldn't finish season two, with the first season of Fargo with one of the most compelling things I have ever watched. It was like watching literature – and I hate literature, but damn that was some good storytelling.

When it comes to dramas and epics, I'd say TV is definitely better than it was.
In terms of sitcoms and family programming, it's gotten worse.

TO be fair, season one was going to be hard to follow up. Just ask True Detective....bleaugh

I didn't bother with season two, because I heard it was so bad.

How is this even a debate? Seriously. TV is factually better now.

For many of your questions my short answer would be YES.
Were the old shows better than the new ones, or vice versa?
For me it depends on the genre of the show. For Dramas especially crime, cop, detective shows it is much better now. Some of that can be credited to technological advancements in both law enforcement and in television production.
For sit-coms and comedy in general it is worse now. The situations are not new, there is almost nothing that hasn't already been done, and in many cases done the best the first time it was done. It also depends on the actor's delivery and timing. Then again comedy depends on timing.
Are they about the same quality, but just different in nature?
NO in general the quality is many times better and in finer detail thanks to advancement in technology.
How has more permissiveness in language and content affected the quality of the programming?
OH yes. Comedy has become bolder and more offensive. Dramas have become more realistic since the "everyday" language is now appearing on the screens. At least on Cable and satellite. For regular "broadcast" television it shows the more restrictive nature of having to be straight-laced.
Is the acting better or worse?
A bit of both. For all genres. IN general comedies are mostly worse. Dramas are a mix.
Is the increasing number of entertainment providers a plus or a minus? Both more providers means just about any type of genre is available for most any entertainment tastes. It also means that there is a greater volume of the same-old same-old. As the Pink Floyd song "The Wall" says "Got thirteen channels of shit on the T.V. to choose from." and from "Weird Al" Yankovic "I Can't Watch This" "Now why did I ever pay for this junk? I hooked up eighty channels and each one stunk."

Many of the early situation comedies were star-driven, like "The Donna Reed Show," for example. Are there any shows like that anywhere, with the actor's name in the title?

In 2000 there were 5 television shows that showed nudity. This past year there were 113 across 36 Networks. -Mr. Skin ![](http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e41/imdbv2/imdbsmileys/popcorn.gif)

There are a lot of great tv shows on currently. However, when channel flipping I mostly find god-awful reality tv and boring sitcoms that are about as funny as being punched in the face whilst having a shit.

I haven't channel flipped or seen a commercial in probably 15 years. Cut the cable... its life changing.

About the same really. More crap on now though so. Thats probably not true. Its more the fact that we forget the crap of the past and remember the good stuff. So it seems like it was less crap in the past. Of coruse this theory of mine could be wrong.

Production, acting, writing, etc. I can name maybe ten quality dramas from each decade before 2000. Now at least ten come out a year. Television used to be the minor leagues. No great actor would touch it because it was a step down from movies. That has completely flipped on its head now. Name me some shows from the 50s, 60s, and 70s that are better than Game of Thrones, The Wire, The Sopranos, or Breaking Bad. You cannot.

But i do think that comedy was generally better in the past. I am not thinking about shows like Family Ties or Full House. But shows like Blackadder, Cheers, Falty Towers or Monty Python. I can`t really think about any show in the last 10-15 years that is better than Blackadder. Of course if there is i have not seen it.

I couldn't finish season two, with the first season of Fargo with one of the most compelling things I have ever watched. It was like watching literature – and I hate literature, but damn that was some good storytelling. Season one was better than two, I'll give you that. TO be fair, season one was going to be hard to follow up. Just ask True Detective....bleaugh I agree with both of you about Fargo's second season. Seeing comments that some folks really loved it, I started watching, but just didn't care about any of the characters or the story line. Maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance, I don't know. Certainly, Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman and their tense, compelling plot were a hard act to follow. Maybe I'll see someone make a case that I should give the 2nd season more of a chance. I think that some of the best sitcoms of recent years are found on cable, such as Curb Your Enthusiasm, Episodes, VEEP, and the short-lived The Brink, with Jack Black and Tim Robbins.

I just do not watch many sitcoms or comedies. However, I do absolutely love Seinfeld, South Park, and The American Office. Most sitcoms today suck though so I agree.
