Great question.....honestly to me TV has fell down hill since the early 00s. I remember when I was a teen in the 90s watching TV I was recording one show and flipping back and forth between two shows so many great shows was on. Now I hardly ever watch TV unless its Walking Dead, Gotham, Lethal Weapon series, and that's about it. Most of the time I'm watching some of my movies on DVD or watching reruns on my ROKU device.

Seriously this is getting dumb. Fell since 2000? That is when TV got really good. It is crazy to think otherwise, but your choice of 'good' shows is suspect so I should not be surprised. All of the best shows of all time have been on since 2000.

There's just a whole lot more from which to choose now, good and bad. enjoy the good, ignore the bad. Its not that difficult. Sadly for some people, it seems to be very difficult.

Sadly for some people, it seems to be very difficult. Sadly, for some people it is impossible to comprehend others having a different opinion.... This has nothing to do with what i wrote. And you are clearly one of those people you speak of. What i am speaking about are people who watch shows they clearly don`t like just to complain about them. What you speaking about here is something completely different I apologize for my crappy spelling.

It is an opinion that TV was better before the turn of the century. I do agree with that. It is just a very stupid opinion.

No it is dumb, any way you look at it. You are free to believe it, but if you do, you have terrible taste.

It's improved a great deal in terms of acting, writing, storylines. I grew up in the late 70's and 80's and I can't handle watching a lot of those shows now. The only problem with a lot of TV now is the agenda's they like to push.

TV is the worst it has ever been. People say we are living in "a golden age" of television, but I don't see it. I try to watch these "amazing" shows that everyone seems to love, but all I see are boring shows with lame plots and bad dialogue spoken by actors who mumble a lot. Network dramas are so bad these days that it's often just a bunch of people standing around talking as quickly as they can because there are so many damn commercials that it doesn't allow time for a real plot. And the dialogue. Man is it terrible. It is so bad that I can't help but laugh at how lame it is while trying to be intense.
Now, that's how I feel in my heart, but I'll qualify it with this. Every generation has television programming geared towards the sensibilities of contemporary viewers. TV today is definitely not to my liking, but it clearly is to the liking of most people. What I see as boring and dumb they see as magnificent. I'm not going to tell them they are wrong. I'm just going to say that I have sensibilities that are not being met with programming today. Give me "Perry Mason," "Love Boat," "Remington Steele," or "Columbo" any day of the week over stuff like "The Wire," "Breaking Bad," or "Game of Thrones." Way too melodramatic and dumb in my biased opinion. Don't even get me started on crap like I.N.I.T.I.A.L. series. This is pretty much why I've had to retreat into MeTV and Antenna TV for entertainment.
In 20 and 30 years people will look back on shows being made today and laugh at them just as much as people today laugh at shows that were made 20 and 30 years ago. (By "laugh" I mean not take them seriously.) That's mostly the way it works. Not most of the people reading this, of course. Many people here will continue to love their beloved "golden age of television" shows. People who won't like it will be kids who haven't been born yet.
As sensibilities change, so do preferences for what is considered entertaining. What seems dramatic today will inevitably be viewed as dated to future audiences. We may be living in the golden age of TV. In truth, only time will tell, but the thing about golden ages is, it's kind of like the word "collectible." Anything labeled "collectible" isn't. And people don't usually know when they are in the golden age of something. It's only in retrospect that that can be determined.

Television is amazing right now, I can't believe this is even an argument. Yes there were a few great shows here and there pre-2000 but they were few and far between. Currently, I'm watching at least 10 shows that are (imo) fantastic and there's plenty more that are very good. It's the consistency of good television right now that settles it.

There are opinions and then there are very stupid opinions. You have those kind of opinions. With posters saying things like this:
Give me "Perry Mason," "Love Boat," "Remington Steele," or "Columbo" any day of the week over stuff like "The Wire," "Breaking Bad," or "Game of Thrones."
This poster has a serious mental problem. Opinions turn dumb when people write things like this. Sorry buddy, you are wrong. Opinions be damned. People are not going to look back at a show like Breaking Bad and laugh at how dumb it is. The show is timeless, much like The Godfather. When the writing and acting are so top notch, it will live on forever. You guys are morons. Sure, I may look like a dick for saying that, but it is the truth. No one with any semblance of intelligence can tell me that TV was better in the 70s than it is today. TV started to really take off at the turn of the century. This is just a fact.

Name a show from that time period and I will name a far better one from this time period. We can keep going until you are out of shows because you cannot name any show from that time period better than a show like The Wire or Breaking Bad. It is not possible.

Better. Much better. Like going from comic books to novels - modern shows can tell a much deeper story. We never envisioned such brilliantly written shows like the Sopranos, the Wire, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones...and others. In the 90's the X-files was the master class in television writing, now they've beyond even that. All for a smaller audience, because there are so many choices and channels today. Heck, we only had a few channels, and hopelessly stupid shows like 'Charlies Angels' got ratings that a modern show could only dream about. Of course, with all the options there is also an ocean of crap to sift through. But the very best shows were never better than they are right now.
Oddly enough, movies are the exact opposite - they suck like a black hole.

The internet has brought me into contact with a whole lot of people try so hard to make the subjective into the objective. It's rather amusing watching them try to justify it too. They're typing up their diatribes like:
