I. Think it has been better at least when it comes to writing, acting and production of tv series, for everyone who says comedy is bad right now What about the very successful Big Bang theory and Modern Family?
The only tv chanels getting worse are:
E which i used to be a big favorite of mine: yes i used to love Rank, sexiest, its good to be, love chain, The E true Hollywood story and revealed with Jules Asner heheh. Now its the kardashians channel.
Mtv : the only thing they have now are reality shows.
VH1 which used to be a mixture between the old E and old MTV and then the only thing we had were reality shows.
Other than those three chanels tv is getting much better.
now Network chanels are suffering from having very little time to pick up an audience, when this forum started i made a post on how bad tv networks react to ratings and how ridiculous is that they expect big numbers in their first season. Its impossible, Fox learned that with House which suffered this first 10 episodes and then we got to Vogler and the show became a phenomenon. Now those people who gave House a real chance they gave Backstrom the Axe in their first season for bad ratings.

re: comedy Yes, the comedy sitcoms are very bad today - unwatchable, actually. At least for me, they're all garbage. Nothing can even remotely touch Seinfeld, Cheers, Taxi, MASH, All in the Family, and so on. I think the last sitcom I liked was Married With Children.
The newer ones are so bad I shut them off after a minute or two. The one bright spot is 'South Park' which is still crudely hilarious after all these years.
I don't know the reason comedy shows suck like a black hole. It's a mystery?

Over all I think tv has improved. I've recently gone back and tried to watch shows that aired way before my time like combat and Twilight Zone. They do hold my interest, but shows like Fantasy Island or Love boat are just unwatchable.
When you compare a show like Battlestar Galactica to the old one, the newer version blows it out of the water.
On the other hand, TOS Trek is still more fun to watch than TNG for me.

The internet has brought me into contact with a whole lot of people try so hard to make the subjective into the objective. It's rather amusing watching them try to justify it too. They're typing up their diatribes like: Has anyone on this site ever had a more punchable face as their avatar? I cringe every time I see your posts.

It's all relative to who we are as individuals. You are correct. If you think Columbo and I Love Lucy are better shows than Breaking Bad and the Wire, you have bad taste.

People use the word opinion as a crutch. They may think Batman vs. Superman is a better movie than The Godfather. They can say, "well, it's just my opinion and you can't argue opinion." It is ridiculous. One is simply better than the other. It is better written, acted, and directed. Everything can technically be boiled down to opinion. You can tell me Kurt Cobain was a better guitarist than John Petrucci. That is your opinion, but it is still a very stupid opinion that no one with any semblance of taste could possibly have. This show argument is much of the same.

I think it has definitely got worse. These days it's all either reality drivel or poorly written unoriginal dramas in the UK. Also comedy is garbage now, in the 90s it was unpc and generally funny, such as Father Ted and Bottom, or Seinfeld, 3rd Rock in the US, now it's bland, safe and predictable. Also look at shows like The Simpsons and South Park that were at their peak in the 90s and are awful now. Also there were great cartoons, like Beavis and Butthead, Daria, Ren and Stimpy, that could be aimed at young and old, anything aimed at young people now is awful and dumbed down. Stuff like HBO were at their peak in the late 90s/early 00s, whereas now they focus on big budgets rather than good storytelling. I find shows like Breaking Bad and The Wire extremely overrated. Where is today's equivalent of Twin Peaks or going back before my time, I Claudius or Roots? Groundbreaking and original. Everything now is a rehash.

It depends on the genre. I was born in the same year that The Beverly Hillbillies premiered, and sitcomville during my growing up years was populated with a lot of mediocrity--a few gems scattered among such drivel as Gilligan's Island, It's About Time, and My Mother the Car. My tween and teen years didn't get much better, with the likes of Happy Days (a terrible show after its first couple of seasons);Mork and Mindy, and the absolute nadir of cruddy sitcoms, Three's Company. I have to thank shows like this, though--it's because they were so terrible that I became such a rabid film fan, as whenever they aired I would quickly switch over to an old movie on one of the local or UHF stations (for those too young to remember, UHF was the cable TV of the 1960s and 1970s--alternate stations that offered a variety of reruns and old movies. Unlike cable, these stations were free, albeit fuzzier, and required additional antennas to attach to your TV set).
I think there were better PBS shows in the 1970s and early 1980s, but they suffered from funding cuts over the past two decades and don't provide the drama series that they were able to in the past.
Most variety shows have disappeared since I was a kid. A lot of them weren't that good (with the exception of The Carol Burnett Show and The Muppet Show), but they were fun. The afternoon talk/variety shows were a pleasant diversion. I'm so glad that those were around when I was a kid, instead of the trash that is shown in its place today--the "Judge ________" court shows, the Jerry Springer-type dregs-of-humanity-on-parade shows, and that "Dr." Phil thing. Little kids of today are exposed to this garbage when they come home from school. Yecch.
At least my childhood was free from this, and from the horror of the current reality shows.

it depends on the show.
I love star trek but not all the shows. I love TNG and like TOS a lot. I can not stand DS9 or VOY. nor could I get into ENTERPRISE.
I grew up loving Gilligan's island but could not stand FTROOP or ANDY GRIFFITH. AND THE OFFICE IS AN ABOMINATION AND AN INSULT! BOTH OF THEM!
loved the brady bunch and step by step [similar] but don't see the popularity of MODERN FAMILY. and I can't stand REBA.
I love MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE and EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND but do not get the popularity of THE MIDDLE or HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER.
I liked FULL HOUSE but FULLER HOUSE does not have the same feel. same with BOY MEETS WORLD and GIRL MEETS WORLD. not the same and the times have changed. [in reality, Cory and Topanga should have done something about that trashy friend! in NYC??? you can't chance it!]
I loved FRASIER but I can not stand [with vehement passion] THE BIG BANG THEORY.
I absolutely adore AMERICAN HORROR STORY and have begun to get into SUPERGIRL and HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER. these are all new/relatively new shows.
it is not the year they were made but THE QUALITY OF WHAT THEY MAKE.

Better. When I was young, the saying was, "100 channels, and none of them have anything good on!" No one says that anymore.
