I guess. Where does this end though? Someone could tell me that Transformers is a better film than The Godfather. Sure, it is all opinions, but let's get real here. It is not the better film.

There is always debate when it comes to subjective opinions, homey.... So you do know that your opinion is a subjective opinion and not a fact.

Not sure.... There are some things that are better, and some things that aren't. Having so many channels and streams, there's bound to be something you like out there, that's better. But I think that variety also gives us all less in common. So we drive ourselves to message boards with people who are enamored with that show instead of easily finding someone else who would talk about it face to face.
There was a little bit of a unifying force in television when people saw 3 or 4 channels and talked about it. It just seems a bit of a non factor in present day, although I do agree that the quality put into the more personalized content that matches my interest is absolutely better except for comedy.
Comedy today just isn't that good on TV for my tastes. If the most entertaining comedy for me is watching Todd Bridges and Danny Bonaduce mock some guy cracking his nuts falling off a bike, then there's something wrong in that area. I get more enjoyment out of watching old reruns for laughs over anything today.

But I think that variety also gives us all less in common. Exactly, there's something I really miss about the family or siblings all assembling at a certain time, because the show is on at that time, and everyone can't just stream their own shows on their tablets, phones, etc. There's something to be said about how the experience of TV has changed. Whether or not it's for the better is up to the individual to decide.

I think a lot of it is better, except as some are saying, comedy. And reality shows. Those are horrible. I've watched some of the older shows that I thought were great back in the day and they are really bad cheesy compared to what is on now.

I think that, on the whole, TV shows have gotten more or less ‘better’ (though some of my favourite shows are from the 90's - and nothing's beaten them, for me, in terms of enjoyment when watching). Yes, there are quite a lot of TV shows that ‘aren’t great’, but there’s a lot of really good ones too.
There’s certainly bigger budgets now/better effects, shows take more risks, there are actors/actresses doing stuff on TV with their performances we never would’ve gotten previously, storytelling in some instances is getting more intricate (and at times convoluted), but I do agree that reality TV is probably the worst thing to have happened to television.
There’s another thing that’s both ‘good’ and ‘bad’ with TV shows nowadays, and that’s the writers of shows listening to fans. I realise there are probably very few shows that actually make adjustments to their shows based on fan comments, but I do think that it does happen on occasion.
I know that there have been shows I’ve watched where lots of people voiced their dislike for a certain character or plot line, but their discontent was ignored. Sometimes they're listened to and alterations made actually improve things. However, I’ve also seen things go horribly wrong for some shows when the audience had too much input on what happened with plot lines or characters in them.
I’ve seen side characters who’ve become SO popular that they’ve almost swallowed the shows they’re in, taking away from the actual leads. Even worse, I’ve seen villain characters who were kept around well past their time/when they should’ve been killed off or written out. So sometimes listening to a show’s audience can be of benefit, but other times it can be a detriment to the show.

Yup... and everyone elses. I'm sure you did a survey of "everyone else" to back that up....

I think it's gotten a lot better. We have more ongoing storylines and more character development than in sitcoms or episodic dramas.

I strongly agree that drama has benefited from long-form storytelling, and greater realism from the creative freedom of relaxed censorship in network shows, and even more so on cable. Sitcoms may have been cheapened by some of those same freedoms, with some shows going for the easy shock laugh instead of really clever writing.

There's just a whole lot more from which to choose now, good and bad.
