EW.comVeteran TV writer Hugh Wilson, best known for creating the ’70s comedy WKRP in Cincinnati that starred Howard Hesseman, has died. He was 74. Hugh Wilson was a filmmaker with a healthy degree of irreverence who worked with talented writers, performers and musicians. My favorites of his movies are 'Police Academy' (1984), 'Burglar' (1987) and 'Blast From The Past' (1999).Television audiences thrilled to 'WKRP In Cincinnati' with Dayton radio clown Gordon Jump and the celebrity satire 'The Famous Teddy Z'. He will be missed. Loni Anderson

Actor Bradford Dillman has died at the age of 87. He was born in San Francisco, California, USA on April 14, 1930. In 1956, Dillman acted on Broadway alongside Fredric March in Eugene O'Neill's play 'Long Day's Journey Into Night'; both men would later star in John Frankenheimer's film 'The Iceman Cometh' (1973), an adaptation of another play written by O'Neill. Success on the stage led to Dillman being courted by many fine film directors. He took leads, second leads and supporting roles, working in theatre, film and television. He worked with film director Richard Fleischer on two pictures, 'Compulsion' (1959) and 'Crack In The Mirror' (1960), both times co-starring with Orson Welles. In the 1970s, Dillman was drawn to a number of thought-provoking genre projects that exhibited paranoid tendencies or explored dark conspiratorial angles. These included 'The Mephisto Waltz' (1971), 'The Resurrection Of Zachary Wheeler' (1971), 'A Black Ribbon For Deborah (1974), 'Bug' (1975), 'The Lincoln Conspiracy' (1977), 'The Amsterdam Kill' (1977), 'The Swarm' (1978) and 'Piranha' (1978). Joe Dante's satirical creature feature 'Piranha' was produced by Roger Corman who'd hire Dillman to headline another production the following decade, Mary Ann Fisher's 'Lords Of The Deep' (1989). Fiercely intelligent yet naturally suspicious, Dillman was an exceptional actor, of whom it was once said, " ... he brought a passive intellectualism to every role". He's remembered at Deadline : Bradford Dillman (1930 - 2018)Thanks for the movies, Mr Dillman. Bradford Dillman R.I.P.

Dorothy Malone dead at 92Remembered most for "Peyton Place" on TV, last seen in "Basic Instinct." No idea why my links to Variery never work... Dorothy Malone was instrumental in helping Roger Corman kickstart his directorial career. This was back in the 1950s, when she was working with Douglas Sirk, or more specifically, around the time she appeared in my joint favourite Jerry Lewis movie, 'Artists And Models' (1955). Corman recalled her as being a creative performer who respected artistry. Thanks for the movies.

Dillman never became a major star -- perhaps he was just a bit too intellectual for the masses. For me his best role was definitely in Compulsion. Dillman's autobiography is very much worth reading, as is this interview (his portrait of Orson Welles is far from flattering): AmericanLegends.comBut I think my fondest memory of Bradford Dillman is his classic quote about choosing a stage name for his acting career: "Bradford Dillman sounded like such a distinguished, theatrical, phony name -- so I kept it."RIP

I find him far more approachable and likeable than Anthony Perkins who became a major star. That's not intended as a knock on Perkins, just expressing an opinion.

There is a theory that to become a film star you must have a certain offputting quality -- not quite menace, but something disconcerting. Take the case of two actors who starred in TV westerns in the late '50s. One show was a smash hit that made its ultra-likable star into virtually a household name. The other was a more modest success, and its star was notably less charmingly likable. Both actors attempted feature film careers in the '60s. The likable one, James Garner, never quite established himself as a top film draw and by 1971 was back on series TV. The not-so-likable one, Steve McQueen, was at one point in the '60s perhaps the biggest movie star in the world.

Ursula K. Le Guin, dead at 88Ursula K. Le Guin, the immensely popular author who brought literary depth and a tough-minded feminist sensibility to science fiction and fantasy with books like “The Left Hand of Darkness” and the Earthsea series, died on Monday at her home in Portland, Ore. She was 88. Her son, Theo Downes-Le Guin, confirmed the death. He did not specify a cause but said she had been in poor health for several months. Ms. Le Guin embraced the standard themes of her chosen genres: sorcery and dragons, spaceships and planetary conflict. But even when her protagonists are male, they avoid the macho posturing of so many science fiction and fantasy heroes. The conflicts they face are typically rooted in a clash of cultures and resolved more by conciliation and self-sacrifice than by swordplay or space battles. Her books have been translated into more than 40 languages and have sold millions of copies worldwide. Several, including “The Left Hand of Darkness” — set on a planet where the customary gender distinctions do not apply — have been in print for almost 50 years. The critic Harold Bloom lauded Ms. Le Guin as “a superbly imaginative creator and major stylist” who “has raised fantasy into high literature for our time.” Entire New York Times Obit IMDb
