War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) - 8.8/10
What a turnaround this was. I saw it opening weekend last summer and gave it a mediocre 6.5/10, but a second viewing really changed things for me. The marketing truly killed this movie in theaters. The trailers and title could not be more inaccurate (this should've been called "Dawn" and the last one "War") and that's why I was so disappointed initially.
Upon second viewing, I shifted my expectations and most of the movie blew me away. It is a gorgeous movie that requires a ton of patience. The camp scenes really do drag, but everything before and after could not have impressed me more. This joins a select few movies (like Sicario, Batman Begins, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, and Apocalypse Now, among others) that disappointed me on first viewing but floored me upon a rewatch. Hopefully Matt Reeves actually gets to direct a Batman movie; he could do great things.

Paths of Glory. The first half, while not bad, didn’t have me that invested but the second half is great and the execution scene is fantastically directed.
7/10

Drive (2011) - 8/10. This was my first viewing, so I'm not exactly an expert on this movie, but I really liked it. Like so many other movies similar to this, though, I feel like multiple viewings are required.

Adaptation 8/10. Great stuff. It loses stream for me near the end but the first 3/4ths especially are brilliant.

I watched most of War for the Planet of the Apes again last night and it is now a solid 9-9.5/10. So much of my enjoyment hinged on my expectations going in. It's brilliant stuff once you see it for what it really is.
Edit: And it just entered my Top 50 at #41.

It’s looks more quiet and contemplative which I like more tbh.

I love these characters and it's just a gorgeous looking movie. Plus when I saw it in theaters I had a terrible cold and sat next to four rowdy little kids, so that probably didn't help my outlook on the movie much.

Amores Perros 6/10. It’s....good. It’s three stories wrapped into one. The first is excellent but the two subsequent ones aren’t nearly as interesting and the nothing really feels like it comes full circle leaving a lot of plot lines to unsatisfying conclusions. It was pretty good though. The gritty atmosphere, dirty cinematography, acting etc are all great.

Gravity 10/10. Alfronso Cuarón man, the guy might be my favorite filmmaker working today. I feel like I’ve truly experienced something after watching his films. He has such a connection with cinema and it’s really shows in his filmmaking. Anyway, this is a beautiful reminder of the visual and emotional power of cinema.

I remember you were a bit less positive about Gravity some time ago. When did you change your mind concerning the movie? I had a similar experience with Gravity. I unfortunately haven't seen in theaters and when I watched it at home during the day it found it a 6/10 at best and just okay (this was 2 or 3 years ago). But then after a while I decided to rewatch it during the evening with the volume as loud as possible without disturbing the neighbours and I couldn't believe how much better it was. Maybe the day of my first viewing was just a bad day, because the second viewing was quite an experience. Since then it's also a 10/10 for me and one of my favorite movies.

I think it was last year when I watched it on a high volume on a huge Tv at night time and I loved it. I actually didn’t love Children of Men either the first time I saw it (7/10) but I’ve seen it twice since that initial viewing and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. I guess the good films really just stick with you even if you didn’t love it the first time around.

Midnight in Paris 8/10
Quirky and charming, I actually really loved it. And Marion Cotillard is such a lovely lady.

Dog Day Afternoon B
First time. F'n hottest day of the year so far, day off work congested as all hell, figured rent this & have some popsicles. I liked the film enough, I just felt all the characters fell flat for me. Solid acting, I simply wasn't rooting for anyone.
