uk.ign.com/articles/2018/08/24/black-panther-marvel-disney-oscars-best-picture-popular-film-category-academy"The Academy's recently announced Best Popular Film Oscar category reportedly won't change Marvel Studios and Disney's plan to campaign for Black Panther to be nominated as Best Picture. Marvel has already begun the groundwork for a Black Panther Best Picture campaign, including hiring a veteran Oscar strategist and putting a "significant" awards season budget behind it -- something, as The Los Angeles Times points out, Marvel had never done before. Marvel's strategy for getting Oscar voters to consider Black Panther for Best Picture includes leaning into the movie's "creative accomplishments and the global impact it made," according to the Times. In other words, Marvel's Oscar campaign will play up the personal nature of director Ryan Coogler's accomplishment and what the film has meant to so many around the world, particularly to underrepresented artists and audiences of color. Black Panther was not only a huge box office hit, it was also a film that mattered deeply to both the industry and to filmgoers. Marvel aims to remind Oscar voters of all that." So despite what a few have said, it doesn't look like they're going to take this movie towards the Best Popular Film award, seems they've got their sights on the bigger Best Film award. I'd think it'd be worthy of a Best Popular Film nomination but Best Film? Hmm if Logan didn't get one then it seems a bit unfair that this would but I suppose it'd still be more interesting than some unknown indie movie that nobody has heard of.

I wonder if that is because its actually good or because it has a black actors in it.
I have not seen the movie but in my experience summer block buster movies not belong among the best belong among the best films nominations.

Well that is the thing with the Oscars. you can look at two ways way.
when the artistic merit counts
when the politics, corruption, money and power counts.
Logan and TDK belong on the artistic merit best picture count. there lower films aka DOFP and Batman Begins could even get for writing and acting more than mcu movies
BP needs all the politics, money and power as it does not have any artistic merit to show for.

The Oscars have been nothing but politics for the past decade.
They're not even fun to watch anymore.

Please tell me about the artistic merit of Logan or the Dark Knight. I’ll start. The Dark Knight +++ I won’t get into the impact this film has had because we all already know that this movie has pretty much changed cinema and it’s influence in pop culture is undeniable. Juxtaposing a cocophony of crime and injustice, Nolan utilizes themes far more interesting than anything the MCU has had, or ever will have, to offer and with it constructs a fascinating, gripping, look at one man spreading his message to society. It’s artistic merit is not to be understated from its stunning cinematography from Wally Pfister who is a tour de force behind to camera, to all the performance, in particular that of Heath Ledger’s who’s presence and performance in this film will trump that of any in every other CBM made. This movie elevated the idea and confinements of what a CBM movie could be into one much much more: a film of beautiful details, stunning imagery, chilling themes and images and an ending that I know has impacted more individuals than just myself. I don’t understand how people just despise this movie out of spite. Logan +++ Again, here’s a film of themes, meaning and value that trump anything the MCU or the DCEU will ever make. I can’t stand the XCU or whatever the fuck its called, but Logan is a touching and poignant end to Jackman’s career. A film about finding peace in your life, loss and regret, and displaying the *true* cost of heroism, and ultimately redemption; this is all captured brilliantly through the neo Western atmosphere thanks to James Mangold behind the camera. Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart’s emotional presence they bring is not to be understated either. “Nature made me a freak. Man made me a weapon. And God made it last too long.” The movie is riddled with engaging dialogues, fascinating character interactions that actually mean something and the film actually has weight to it. Oh and the action? Best of any CBM. I actually prefer this film to The Dark Knight, but regardless, both are films act as brilliant reminders that there are actually people underneath all that spandex and these two films along with Spider Man 2 are the only CBM that I can rewatch and get more out of with each viewing.

Maybe your mothers?

I'm going to make what I don't think it actually that much of a prediction, really. In fact I think its a done deal. No doubt in my mind.
Black Panther WILL be nominated for Best Picture under the Popular Movie category, AND it WILL WIN.
Wakanda Forever!!!

Infinity War deserves it over Black Panther. I don't know about "deserves". Infinity War is definitely the bigger, more ambitious, and most likely the more difficult movie to make. But Black Panther has the social awareness and diversity angle, not to mention a stronger story and overall cultural significance.
Infinity War will be nominated in the Popular Movie category as well, but Black Panther will win.
I have very little doubt this will happen.

Go and rewatch ‘Black Panther,’ an insufferably bland film with no engaging visual style, cringy dialogues, annoying nattering characters, uninteresting narrative and some of the most poorly choreographed fight sequences I’ve ever seen.

You should watch some more Nolan films. He shoots action scenes likes he's Stevie Wonder and watching henchmen try to pretend they couldn't easily take out Bale in that silly costume is always comedy gold.
