Ok for years people who loved stuff like DD and Elder Scrolls were looked at like geeks. Now everyone and their sister is watching GoT and thinking it is great. While I have nothing negative to say about the show. It is just odd how popular trends shift. I wonder what causes it, is it just like new people finding out about a great Ice cream that hippers (lol) have known about for years. Or is a change in society.

It has to do primarily with a show being good and enjoyed by a lot of people (Far more people do not watch Game of Thrones than watch it though)

The first seasons have the fantasy elements not taking that much importance or screen time. It was more similar to the Sopranos in Middle Earth than anything else and I think that was part of the appeal of the show.
It was mainly a show about politics and to be honest, I still think that the entire show would be more interesting if there was no supernatural threat beyond the Wall.
Another reason is that geekdom has became mainstream in the late 90s, early 2000s. Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings came around that time and they were very popular and so were the first X-Men movies and the Sam Raimi Spider Man trilogy. You might be surprised about fantasy but look at the Superhero craze. That also became mainstream.
All those kids that grew up in 80s and 90s become adults but their hobbies didn't really change. They still continue to play video games and they still continued to buy comic books

There are much better shows which lasted 2 or 3 seasons and never achieved a fraction of GoT's fan-base.

This is back when it wasn't:

I think the boobies helped some to try it out. A combination of word of mouth and word of boob.

I was thinking the same thing today. It blows my mind how popular GoT is considering most post-pubescent men and nearly all women typically wouldn't touch the sword & sorcery genre with a 10 foot pole.
The high production value, the HBO brand, and R-rated sex and violence, and most importantly the revenge-based soap opera. These all partially explain why it's popular, but nothing explains why it's this popular.

I think it’s the way the subject matter is treated.
Back in the day, fantasy genres were treated as B movies. So, it had cheesy dialogue and situations. It was essentially aimed at kids and teenagers.
Game of Thrones has stronger characters who actually act and talk like adults. It makes them more relatable to mainstream audiences.

Because I can just watch it and not have to smell the 400 lb. D&D player next to me.

There was a lot of naked gals that first season. Most of the guys I spoke with back then were more agitated after the big sex eps. "Did you see it this week?"

First of all, it is well done which brings in viewers. Secondly, everybody is talking about it. So that brings more viewers in. Because people want to see what everyone is talking about. And people want to join in on group activities.

It's just a great series. People also loved LOTR, not only the geeks. When there is a good production, people will like it regardless the genre.
And for the boobs part, is that really a thing in the US? I mean, how often/many minutes do you really see boobs there? There is more boobs and sex in the average midnight commercials on TV here. Not even worth mentioning imho.

You are talking about two completely different things. "DD" I assume is Dungeons and Dragons; Elder Scrolls (I had to look it up) is a video game. While Game of Thrones may have some similarities in general themes with your two examples, its popularity comes from the fact that it is a big budget TV series. A completely different medium from role-playing games or video games.

We're still a very strange and Puritanical lot here.
People will bring their 10 yr old to see Rambo or Deadpool without blinking an eye.......but a boob pops out during the Superbowl? People lose their minds.

Boobs are one thing, but there is nothing more awkward than watching Game of Thrones with your parents and Littlefinger goes on a soliloquy while two lesbian prostitutes lick each other's bums.

It took me a while to get into the show.
I say give it a try again in another year or so and you might feel differently.
