Steve Carlton was the best pitcher in the game for several years, winning 4 Cy Youngs along the way. Schmidt In 80-81 was at his peak. During the Broad Street Bully days a case could be made for Bobby Clarke or Bernie Parent. Maybe Parent, not Clarke. Clarke wasn't even the best forward on his own team. Reggie Leach, Rick MacLeish and Billy Barber were the far better players. Carlton played while Seaver and Palmer and even Ryan were white hot. Carlton was not the hands down best pitcher. Plus Dock Ellis threw a no hitter while tripping out on LSD. Did Carlton ever achieve that? Schmidt? Never liked him at all so I can't be honest about him. But I never considered him like a LeBron or a Lawrence Taylor or a Gretzky. If Carlton wasn’t the best in 72 then you’re not familiar with that season.

If Carlton wasn’t the best in 72 then you’re not familiar with that season. I could tell you this, no matter what Carlton did in '72 it doesn't match what Guidry did in '78. Or Doc in '85.

I'm an SF Giants fan so yeah, you could say we've had the best player, one of the best players of all time and I doubt there's too much argument about that. And of course I'm referring to Johnny LeMaster. I think we all agree he was the greatest.

Another mention of Brady.
Folks, the guy was not the best player. I mean do you need reminding that he faced Eli in the Super Bowl and lost. And that happened TWICE!
Plus the year Brady was out, a nobody named Cassel went 11-5.

Wow, I get to mention Dominik Hasek twice in one day.
The Bills had a running back in the 70's who was very good. He made a couple films after that and did some TV ADS. The name eludes me

NHL - nope. Gilmour was the 2nd best for a year 92-93, Matthews & Tavares are arguably top 10 right now. MLB - nope. Roger Juiced Clemens - 97 & 98 back to back pitching triple crowns & Cy Young awards, yet it was Griffey & Bonds still ahead. NBA - yes! Kawhi Leonard 2018-2019. Stormed the Raptors through the league all way to the title. NFL - Tom Brady. I think yeah f'n yes.

US sports first : NFL : Nope. Seau, Means, Tomlinson, Gates - all good, but not best in the sport. MLB : since I’ve been a fan, I don’t think anyone on the O’s roster counts. NHL : Hasek. Maybe. NBA : don’t have a team, so no. Football : Manchester United : at various times - Cantona, Schmeichel, Giggs, Scholes, Beckham and Ronaldo could’ve been considered best in the world at that time. Dortmund : Sammer. Maybe. Munich we aren’t. Western Sydney Wanderers : lol. Cricket : see Hosko’s post. But Australia at one stage had the best batsman, best keeper, best spinner and best fast bowler (the 4 main disciplines) easily in the world. Waugh, Gilchrist, Warne, McGrath respectively. Rugby League : The one and only Benji Marshall. Did things on football fields no one else in the world could.

I'm not talking about Babe Ruth days. In your lifetime has a team you root for ever had the hands down, no questions asked best player in the sport? For me I've experienced it a few times:: NY Giants - Lawrence Taylor NY Mets - Dwight Gooden NY Yankees - Reggie Jackson, Ron Guidry, and possibly Don Mattingly NY Rangers - Wayne GretzkyNY Nets - Doctor J NY Knicks - Jeremy Lin (it wasn't for whole season, but for two weeks Lin was hands down the best basketball player on Earth) Check it out folks. This dope thinks that Rangers-era Gretzky was the best player in hockey. Has he ever heard of Mario Lemieux?
