I've been watching some of the Coachella livestream on YouTube over the weekend. I missed it last week, but I was able to rewind to catch up with Danny Eflman's set from last night.
I think the sound mix is slightly off and I kinda wish they would show some more of the visual presentation on the screen, but this is an awesome show. Such an odd ecclectic mix of stuff that he's across the many decades he's been making all different kinds of music with a mix of his Oingo Boingo songs, film (and TV) scores, and his super weird new album. He has a limited time on stage (like everyone), but I could watch this for so much longer.
Also, just as an aside; he's 68 years old and performed shirtless for half that show and it's crazy that he looks as good as he does.
And it's funny that he's using the guitarist from Limp Bizkit.

As of now, I'm going to aim to go next year. I haven't been since 2016.

I've seen him twice in NYC, once at Lincoln Center with the symphony orchestra doing film scores from the Burton movies, and once with the original surviving cast doing Nightmare Before Christmas live to the film at the Barclay's Center. But this is something different and very cool. I think you can still rewind on Coachella channel 3 on YouTube to last night to watch it.

Jazz Fest weekend 2 starts today! Today’s highlights are Ziggy Marley, Kermit Ruffins and Ted Hefko, who played at my wedding! Yeah!

Saw Royal Blood last night at Terminal 5, located on Manhattan's west side. For those who are unfamiliar, Royal Blood is an English rock duo helmed by frontman Mike Kerr (who plays a bass, but it sounds like a guitar), and kickass drummer Ben Thatcher. Think Black Keys, but with a much harder edge. It was my third time seeing them, and they've gotten better each time. Last night, they were tight, played a rockin set that had the whole venue moving, and I loved every bit of it. That said, Terminal 5 is easily my least favorite NYC venue. It's cramped as hell, it stinks, it's kind of difficult to move from one area to the next, the sounds isn't great, and they do this insanely idiotic thing when they show ends - in spite of the fact that there are exits literally everywhere, when the show ends, they make everyone, coming down from 3 separate levels, leave through one single-file doorway. It creates a massive bottleneck that takes a long time to navigate. It plays on one of my phobias, you know the one, the thing that happened in Rhode Island during the Great White show some 19 odd years ago at The Station. Ugh. Anyway, I can't not think of that every time I leave that venue. Dinner was at Empellon located on 59th Street. It was decent. Great appetizers and cocktails, the entrees were just OK. Good for a pre-show small bite and drink, but I would pass on a full dinner.

Just bought tickets to see Sigur Rós on Friday. I saw them once about eight years ago and it was great.

OK, been a busy week!
Last night, I got to attend for free (sorta - I own a MAYC, so entry last night was free) ApeFest at Pier 17, which had Lil Wayne (not my favorite), Snoop Dogg and Eminem. Earlier in the week, ApeFest had the Roots, LCD Soundsystem, among others, but I was only able to go last night.
I've talked about Pier 17 earlier in this thread, it's one of the better venues in Manhattan. And while I hate Lil Wayne, I'll give him credit insofar as he actually performed. Snoop and Eminem came out together, they introduced a video that they collaborated on celebrating their BAYC. That was awesome, but then Eminem left, Snoop performed about 3 songs, but then DJed for an hour. And by DJed, I mean he just played a spotify playlist of a sort of hip-hop's-greatest-hits, and occasionally sang a lyric or two, all while smoking a blunt. I had a great time, don't get me wrong, but the prospect of Snoop and Eminem playing together, neither of whom I had ever seen, had me expecting a bit more.
Alas, they can't all be homeruns.
What was a homerun, however, was the client event I went to afterwards - Questlove DJ set at Sojo House, hosted by Lil Heroes. That was poppin! Basically just a private dance party. Fuck yeah!
On Tuesday, I was able to see San Holo, who I really don't like, but he works with another client of mine so he put on a free show at Luke Studios, which is a non-descript tiny little recording space in Tribeca. Cool event, had a great time even though the music isn't quite my cup of tea.

Booked my tickets to see Muse October 11. Didn’t listen to the last album, and wasn’t a big fan of the two before that, hope for earlier material.

I used to love Muse but I think I only listened to Origin of Symmetry and Absolution. Pretty sure the next one didn't really do anything for me. Having said that, I bet they're a great band to see live.

Just got back from The Black Keys. My second time seeing them, and I don't know if it was the venue, or my seats, but this was better than the first time I saw them. They were on their A game tonight.

Got tickets to see Pavement in Los Angeles - - in September of 2022. Some people don't know them, but they sold out their dates very quickly - - had to add shows in LA and Brooklyn to meet more of the demand (three shows in LA; four in Brooklyn). First time they'll be touring the states in 12 years. Not sure how I missed this post last year but alas, with that show fast approaching, now is as good a time as any! I was never a big Pavement fan, but one of Stephen Malkmus' solo album (well, technically with The Jicks), Pig Lib, is one of my all-time favorites. In seeing your post, I'm seeing pretty cheap tickets for Pavement in the first week in October at King Theater in Brooklyn, another A+ venue in a terrific area. Thanks for the heads up, maybe I'll check that out!

YES!!!! After a 2+ year delay, last night afforded me the opportunity to see Rage Against the Machine with Run the Jewels opening up (and they played one song together as well) at MSG. Fuck yes. I've always been a big Rage fan but the energy from their set last night was second to none. From the moment they came out until the final notes of Killing in the Name rang out, the whole crowd was into it. My buddy and I had GA tickets and were able to get pretty close without it being packed. Ideal spot.
We're also really fortunate because they just announced that Rage is canceling the rest of the tour as Zack is battling a broken foot. He performed the whole show from a chair (not quite the throne I saw Dave Grohl play in a few years ago).
Third time seeing both Rage and RTJ.
Of course, dinner was at Don Bogan's korean BBQ. Nothing makes for a great night more than jumping around in GA while farting marinated mushroom and kimchi fumes all over the place.

Well, so much for going to see Incubus. They've postponed and the date is now "TBA".
