It's a great fun film, and carries the tones of Captain America: The First Avenger along with the fantastical quality of the first Thor. And it's honestly on that sort of level as well. I quite enjoyed it. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it, but it is not the best comic book film in the last 10 years, and while it is vastly superior to anything in the DCU so far, it does not eclipse the upper crust of the MCU. I am however, looking forward to the sequel.

it does not eclipse the upper crust of the MCU. It has already taken the title of 'Biggest Selling and Most Successful Female Superhero Movie of All Time.' I don't see Marvel being able to compete with DC with female superhero movies going forward especially when they wouldn't even make a 'Black Widow' movie and the majority of the biggest selling female lead comic book series are by DC, Image Comics/Top Crow (Witchblade has outsold every Marvel female lead series), Event Comics, Dynamite Entertainment etc. Marvel will be lucky if they can compete with 'Painkiller Jane', 'Avengelyne', 'Witchblade' and 'The Pro' with female lead movies going forward 'cause they simply lack the female superheroes to be successful in that field.

Wonder Woman has more similarities with the first 2 Superman movies than with crappy Captain America: The First Avenger or Thor.
1. A robber shoots Lois with a gun and Clark stops the bullet with 1 hand. A German spy shoots Steve with a gun and Diana stops the bullet with her bracelet. 2. Clark's 1st public appearance as Superman (flying up and saving Lois and then catching the falling helicopter) is epic and is the most iconic scene in CBM history. Diana's 1st public appearance as Wonder Woman (climbing up out of the trench and charging the enemy and liberating the town from the enemy) is epic and will be 1 of the most iconic scenes in CBM history.
3. Lois and Clark have a brief romance. Diana and Steve have a brief romance. Nothing unrequited in both movies.
4. Superman battles 3 fellow Kryptonians who are just as powerful as he is and can't be defeated by ordinary humans. Wonder Woman battles a fellow God who is just as powerful as she is and can't be defeated by ordinary humans.

Well I'm not really worried about who wins that competition to be honest, and I don't think competing in female superhero movies is going to be a large category. Also they didn't make a Black Widow film for a reason. It didn't advance the overarching plan. Black Widow isn't a main character in Marvel and WW kinda is. Also, I'm pretty sure Captain Marvel will do alright, Wasp is coming as a title character, and they always have characters like She-Hulk, Spiderwoman, Scarlet Witch, Spider Qwen, and perhaps even characters like Moondragon and Quasar (Phyla Vell) they could give a run at. I don't think DC is coming out with anything other than WW, so I don't know what the category of female superhero movies really even means other than WW and Captain Marvel at this point, or why you think Marvel couldn't compete with them if they wanted to. There isn't going to be some arms race for female centric movies if that's what you think.

I think its greatest strength is in its simplicity. The plot is not terribly complicated but it's still got this epic feel so you can enjoy the characters and action. I found it the best superhero movie since the first Guardians of the Galaxy.

I found it the best superhero movie since the first Guardians of the Galaxy. I did appreciate it's simplicity and mostly for Diana's very genuine story arc of going from naively positive to realistically hopeful after a transition of being broken down a bit.
I compare it to and put it nearly in line with First Avenger and Thor, although in terms of recent films since GOTG1, I don't think I'd call it the best. Civil War is vastly superior and I'd call Doctor Strange better for sure too. Honestly I'd rather watch Ultron, Ant Man, and GOTG2, and I haven't even seen Logan yet.

I am however, looking forward to the sequel. Pretty much agree with everything you've said here. I enjoyed the hell out of this flick for the most part, though I did think the boss battle at the end was a let down. First of all, the way Steve met his demise (every part of it-- the plane full of bombs, the final farewell as she holds onto a memento of him, all of it) was identical to The First Avenger. Then Ares turns into the Emperor from ROTJ and starts using the force, force lightning, and telling Diana to join him on the dark side. I didn't like any of that stuff.
There were a few other things here and there I found disagreeable but overall it was great. Fantastic chemistry between the leads, a fun story and excellent action sequences (minus the force battle at the end) made this easily the best entry into the DCEU to date. They finally figured out these movies should be fun, but still try to make some sense. I now have high hopes for Justice League.
As far as how it grades against the MCU, well, I always read more Marvel than DC so of course MCU films are going to resonate more with me to begin with. Still, WW is flat out awesome and I can't wait to see more of this tonal shift from DC/WB. As a film fan (as opposed to comparing Marvel to DC for competition's sake) I'd say Thor was more compelling visually. The Asgard stuff looks amazing whereas the mythological elements in this flick were understated, I thought. Nothing wrong with that approach, either.

Well said although it does nothing to improve my interest in Justice League. That one is still Snyder and still looks like BVS. Plus I'm probably even more of a Marvel guy than you. I honestly am not all that interested in DC, so if it's good fine, if it's bad, I'll enjoy reading all the chatter about it.

I didn't care really, but I'll give an honest opinion. The rest of the DCU is still a bunch of shit and if JL is a dumpster fire I'll have a lot of fun reading about it, but WW, as it stands was good. I give it a 7/10

It feels much more like Marvel for sure, but there were some things left undone that I don't think Marvel would have let happen. I won't say for the sake of spoilers if you haven't seen it. I do think saying it's a mash up of FA and Thor is pretty accurate ethough.

Also, I doubt the film's THAT good. DC obviously paid the critics for those reviews.

I don't think their problem was all darker and edgier. It was pure shitty writing. Although I am amused that they think being darker and edger is the same thing as being adult. It isn't.

Darker and edgier was part of the problem, because it doesn't work for Superman. And the shitty writing, too. I'm just having fun turning that old insult back on DC.

And I agree that Wonder Woman is better than both Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor.
