Episode 2 thoughts: I like that the show keeps tackling issues we haven't seen in other sci-fi shows. This episode addressed porn addiction. Yep. Orville is following the classic Star Trek formula, exploring issues by transplanting them into a sci-fi format. Yeah. One thing they're pretty strong on is the fact that the Orville, whilst a very capable vessel, is also a limited one. As is the crew for that matter. They aren't going to be able to pull solutions out of their ass for every situation. I didn't get offended, but it kinda weirded me out a little. Gay sex, not my cup of tea. When Orville was announced, my great hope for the show was that it would be a proper sci fi show. I really did not want to have something like Red Dwarf, where it's like 15% sci-fi and 85% comedy. Not that I hate Red Dwarf, it's fine for what it is, but I was hoping Orville would be 85% sci fi and 15% humour, just because I love ship-based sci-fi so much, and really wanted a show to watch. I think this is why critics had such a problem with the show, by the way. I think they came out of it thinking "it's a comedy that doesn't have a lot of comedy, that sucks". I came out of it thinking "It's a sci fi show with a dash of comedy, that's awesome". So yeah, loving this season and this show.

I don't see why aliens from different parts of the galaxy would be dating, they're as likely to have offspring as if a human mated with a horse. What's that got to do with it? Not everyone dates with the intention of having offspring. Hey, if I lived on the Orville I'd definitely be up for dating Alara. Her not being Human wouldn't be the slightest impediment to me, and nor would the lack of children. In fact the lack of children would be an added bonus.

Hang on how did the people from the planet survive the trip to the Orville? The radiation was supposed to be so severe that only Isaac & Bortis could survive the short journey from the shuttle to the underground facility, yet this apparently wasn't too much for the over 30 people from the planet.

They had radiation suits so I guess they must have been really good radiation suits or the people from that planet already had some resistance to radiation.

I thought the porn addiction episode was the season opener? No, there was an earlier episode that aired on a different day (Sunday Dec 30th instead of Thursday).

Episode 3 was pretty good. The home invasion horror elements were a surprise. And it was nice to see the Doctor in a cameo. Sad to see Alara go, but maybe it's not permanent? And I thought the jar of pickles was perfect. A very touching ending. Two doctors! Don't forget about Phlox!

It was a good episode, the ending where Ed opens the present was great. Always nice to see Trek actors making cameos. It sucks Alara won't be on the show anymore.
Why did Halston Sage leave the show?

Rumour has it that Halston Sage doesn't get on with the rest of the cast. They don't like her, she doesn't like them. No idea why, though. Maybe just a personality conflict.

If that is the case, this is a good move for everyone. Nothing good could come from a toxic set. Yeah. It's a shame because Alara was a pretty awesome character. Hey, anybody notice that the Orville has lots of really good strong female characters? And I don't just mean physically strong, lol. You look at Alara and Kelly. Both are mentally strong women, both are competent. But neither is depicted as some perfect paragon of virtue. Kelly is brave and tough, she has a sensible head on her and handles authority well, but also has 'day drinks' and pot brownies, and breaks the rules sometimes. Alara is smart and competent, but young and inexperienced and hampered by a lack of self confidence. Claire is smart and uber-competent, but she's not the best mother and struggles to control her kids. They're all great characters... but the Orville has never advertised itself as some feminist cheerleader, never claimed that it deserves credit for giving women strong roles, never crowed about what it's doing with these ladies. And so far as I know, there's very little in the way of fan hate towards any of these actresses. Where are all these 'toxic fans' that are supposed to hate all female and ethnic minority representation? Could it possibly be that the hate only flows towards badly written women and minorities, just like it does for men?!

To all who keep wondering, the show started with 2 comedy writers and 2 drama writers. It now has 1 comedy writer and 3 drama writers. Because Seth's true passion was a continuation of the Star Trek style show that is dramatic, inspirational and exploratory. Without a dystopian feel. But he wants to keep it light-hearted. orville.wikia.com/wiki/The_Orville

So onethreetwo, what did you think of episode 4 ? And while we are at it, what do you think of the Fox Now app? This is a bit embarrassing, but I don't have a cable provider. Fox Now offers you a 60 min preview pass to watch one episode before they make you log in with your provider. I didn't know that, paused the show, and my pass ran out lol. I will watch it when I get home from work tonight on Hulu I guess. Don't be embarrassed. That can happen to anybody. And has happened to all of us. Let me know what you think after you watch it on Hulu.

That would suck, I love the show. They shouldn't have given it such a late timeslot.
