So I finally started watching Game of Thrones. Mind you, I had gone through great lengths not to spoil the show for myself so all I know is: 1. The last season was horrible, but the first 4-5 seasons are awesome. Basically as long as they went by the books. 2. There is lots of sex and violence and some dragons oh and 3. Many characters die/ are killed off. I watched the first 2 episodes yesterday. I ended up somewhat depressed and crying at the end of episode two (killing of the pup) and that second episode was overall so violent and filled with horrible people that I thought I might not even want to continue watching. But I do see the immediate quality of the craft. Acting, casting, production design, music, and writing all speaks to me. And I do like fantasy genre as well as drama a lot. And I love the fact I have 5 good seasons of the show already out and I can binge freely. But if most episodes are like episode 2 season 1 I might struggle to keep watching. But I admit I am invested in John Snow, Aryia Stark and Tyrion Lannister already and want to see what happens to them. The rest of the characters I either dont care about or actively dislike. And man, whats up with all the incest?? As for the gore - I generally dont mind gore at all and am mostly ok with violence on adults, but violence towards kids and animals is not something I am ok watching or at least not repeatadly. What do you think, should I give it another chance and will I like it? Please No Spoilers. Thank you.

Well, that's definitely not the last time you're gonna see kids dying, and there are episodes far, far more depressing and violent than s1e2. As for horrible people, certain characters haven't even scratched the surface of how horrible they are and there are some even worse waiting to show up in later seasons. And the incest is here to stay.
All of this is to portray a medieval like world in a more realistic way (vs something like Lord of the Rings, where nearly everyone is sexless and noble) but it's not for everyone. The writing and acting definitely gets even better and peaks in the third and forth seasons. Ironically, it's once the show stars deviating from the books when it gets a little less bleak and more fanservicey, so you may enjoy the "bad seasons" more than the ones everyone liked. If you make it there.

You’d be your own best gage but the series doesn’t pull many punches. You’ll see all manner of horribleness as people of all ages will die in horrible fashion. That’s not the focus, mind you, but if that’s something that triggers too much negative emotion on your part it may not pan out.
The Pros of the show for me were always the characters and how their storylines may connect. There’s a constant evolution of characters too so that some you may like in season 1 you’ll hate by season 3 and more importantly some you hate right away you may grow to love.

I think Ill try to complete full season one and decide then.

I'm a guy that likes story, cinematography, action, violence, tits, details, and morally ambiguous characters, so it was perfect for me. My oldest kid loved it. My wife likes feel good action adventure but also likes Gladiator, Die Hard, The Patriot, The Witcher, LOTR, and she liked it. I made GOT family tree charts for each season (no spoilers), and my family got a lot more out of it because they don't keep track of details like me. (I had already seen it twice when I watched it with them).

The author loves exaggerating things and feeds on his reader's fantasised blood pressure, which he extracts with the carrot snatching technique of making them hope for a thing they don't quite get. When by some strange twist the donkey gets to bite in the carrot it has either started to rot or been spiked with Dornish mushrooms. There is, however, sound logic to the development of events. People made to believe in Santa Claus grow up to realise their naivety. Game Of Thrones has a way of making its audience want the implausible before bringing it back down to earth, often through unpleasant outcomes. So more kids and more friends will die in addition to side characters who stood in the wrong place or did the wrong thing. Dragons will kill innocent goats too. What did you expect? Now, depressed, crying people for watching GoT are what has popularised the phenomenon of YouTube reaction videos. Film yourself and put it online

I even cut out and pasted xeroxed pictures of the characters by the names to provide visual aides. I guess we film buffs are detail-oriented.

Thank you! If you wind up needing clarification without spoilers just ask. The books had a nice reference in the back that briefly named all the major houses and their main characters and relations to each other. It was very useful. The show doesn’t really have a way to do that.

ok, I am 6 episodes in and I am really enjoying it. Its such a well made show. I am not digging all the violence and plotting, but I have to admit the show has superior craft within it and I really respect that.
I also very much enjoy the writing. The dialogues, especially compared to the flat emotionless drivel of Witcher S2 feel so fresh, genuine and intriguing. Each character feels very unique, layered, complex and real at the same time. What an achievement on the writers side.
Yeah. Great show. 8/10 so far.

They only get more layered as the seasons go on.

Each character feels very unique, layered, complex and real at the same time. What an achievement on the writers side. This is why it attracted an audience far broader than that of the usual historical fantasy genre and received high praise from critics. It is also a good basis for serious discussion. Come to the 6th episode, you find that even the proposed protagonists, the king and his old friend, have diverging opinions on how to move forward. Robert goes hunting and Ned Stark does just the opposite of what he told him to. Who's right? And does it really matter that Prince Joffrey is not a real blonde when a horde of savages has crowned the heir of the previous dynasty? This is deeper stuff than young girls screaming at monoliths…

Expect a well crafted soap opera in a fantasy setting. But don’t expect great fantasy genre fiction. And definitely don’t expect a character driven story. Early on, I was impressed with the great dialogue and characterization. But don’t be fooled into thinking that any of these characters will receive coherent well planned arcs. Most are canon fodder and the rest are frozen in stasis until the final season. And despite some great world building, the plot is ultimately thin and unsatisfying.
As you can tell, I walked away with a relatively low opinion of the show. But it is in many ways quite exceptional for what it is. And I do still recommend it.

Have fun! It is (was) must-see TV, in spite of the disappointing way it ended.

When you said you were "6 episodes in", I understood you'd watched the 6th. Well, Viserys got his crown faster than expected. He wasn't exactly king material but I hoped he would make more trouble than that. Too bad for the invasion plans. I suppose Daenerys will get busy producing more sons for the big Khal, now.
Good question. She's the kind of sister who didn't care too much for her brother, for some reason… he was no dragon after all. The way her marriage started, I expected her to yearn for a way out of it, quite possibly a violent, strangly or poisoned one, but it seems a large part of the audience buys into the big savage fantasy instead. Granted, she's probably safer that way. At least until Robert's assassins turn up…
