I might be a bit generous with my ratings, but damn it, I sure love his trilogy of sleazy splatter cult-classics starting up with Basket Case, continuing with Brain Damage and ending with Frankenhooker. All three very different films, the first is probably the one that got me hooked onto Henenlotter and similar lower budget horror and b-movies of the era, but it has lots of heart, charm and so much ridiculous fun and crazy stuff, yet there is a sadness behind all the goofyness too.
I think the latter sad and dark themes was far more explored into the visually and dreamlike Brain Damage, and while one I do not revisit as often as Basket Case, it is stuffed with a lot of unforgettable moments, from the blow-job scene, to the whole mental breakdown part, and goes rather dark places at times. The end theme is surely the most beautiful melody from any of his films though.
Frankenhooker is the one that has the most cheese and sleaze, and is almost a full blown comedy compared to the earlier films.
I did purchase the Basket Case Blu-ray trilogy last year, still not gotten to it yet, but have a feeling the sequels might grow on me, as I was not too fond of them from earlier watches, while Bad Biology is maybe the most sleazy in your face kind of entertainment, where it seems even die hard fans where not quite sure what to think at the time of release. Might have become more popular over time, but again have not seen it as often as his 80s and early 90s films.
Anyway, my rating and ranking is pretty close at the top, after that there is a big drop, not quite sure how I rated the rest, but might fill in over time.
01. Basket Case (1982) - 10/10 02. Frankenhooker (1990) - 10/10 03. Brain Damage (1988) - 10/10 04. Bad Biology (2008) - 6,5/10

While I don’t find Brain Damage to be as re-watchable as Basketcase and Frankenhooker. I think it’s his best made film, and like you mentioned, goes a little deeper and darker. Love Basketcase cameo too. It’s a shame he didn’t make an extra film or two between Basketcase and Brain Damage. Because he showed unique glimpses in his work, despite the budget limitations. I remember watching him talk in a clip (can’t remember where from though) about the Basketcase sequels and it sounded like his heart wasn’t much into them like his previous films.

Yeah, I think the Basket Case sequels were probably part of a big 3 movie deal with I believe Shapiro and Glickenhaus, where his focus was probably most lying on Frankenhooker, but since Basket Case was maybe his most famous or successful release up til then, I guess bringing back Duane and Belial from what seemed like a most certain death, was thought as the best way to come through. Would loved if an anthology horror film was made back in the 80s or early 90s, with Frank, William Lustig and maybe Larry Cohen behind it all. Maybe have the old 42nd Street as some kind of a main theme in the different stories.
