Maniac -7/10 Maniac Cop -6/10 Maniac Cop 2 -5/10 Maniac Cop 3 -4/10 Lustig sure did like his films to have maniacs. Even the films without telegraphing it in the film title, still had their maniacs.

01. Maniac (1980) - 10/10 02. Vigilante (1982) - 8/10 03. Relentless (1989) - 7,5/10 04. Maniac Cop 3: Badge of Silence (1993) - 6,5/10 05. Maniac Cop (1988) - 6/10 06. Maniac Cop 2 (1990) - 5,5/10 07. Uncle Sam (1996) - 5/10 08. Hit List (1989) - 5/10 09. The Expert (1995) - 3/10
He sure loved to make sleazy and atmospheric films about murdering lunatics, but William Lustig also did a few very impressive thrillers like the revenge film Vigilante, that I believe stands among the very best Death Wish "rip-offs" during the early 80s. Gritty and violent, but not without a solid cast and some very fine performances.
Relentless I finally found on a DVD last summer, and was very pleased at how good it turned out to be, specially the roles from Judd Nelson and Robert Loggia.
And while Maniac Cop is the better of the series, I do prefer the third due to having Robert Davi in the lead and yeah, Maniac is my favorite, as it so much lived up to the intense trailer and loved the whole beauty and the beast that Caroline Munro and Joe Spinnell seemed to have going in several of their films together. But Maniac is a special one, sleazy and violent as hell, but somehow Joe makes his character not a total unlikeable creep, you feel for him and also one big part of a lot of these Lustig horror-thrillers with tons of gritty and nasty atmosphere, is probably a lot to do with the scores by Jay Chattaway, specially Vigilante and the Maniac Cop/Maniac films.
If I had to recommend just one, I guess the most "commercial" or easy going would be Maniac Cop, but my pick for his finest hour is with Maniac.
The only one I never cared much for, is the poorly and rather disappointing martial arts-action film The Expert, that was just not very good at all.
