I liked You're Next and The Guest a lot.
But Death Note sucked, and his other two recent directorial efforts are absolutely terrible.
Blair Witch was very bad and Godzilla vs Kong was stunningly, titanically awful.

Blair Witch was very bad and Godzilla vs Kong was stunningly, titanically awful. I did prefer his Godzilla vs Kong over the previous three American Godzilla films. Digestible popcorn fodder. I had the opposite reaction. I kind of liked the first of the new Warner Bros Godzilla movies, I can barely remember the second one, but Godzilla vs Kong was memorably awful for me. It was so aggressively stupid and also so dull and boring at the same time, and so uninspired visually that it's almost an achievement. When the ridiculous looking, poorly rendered cartoon buildings and monsters aren't smashing into each other in visually confusing ways, the attempts at dialogue and plot and character writing is mind numbing. What I'm saying is; I didn't particularly care for this one.

The Guest -9/10 You're Next -8/10 A Horrible Way to Die -7/10 Godzilla vs Kong -5/10 Blair Witch -4/10 ABCs of Death -4/10 (although his segment was great on its own) VHS -2/10 VHS 2 -2/10
I don't hate GvK quite as much as Goons, but do wish he'd return to the lower budget, non franchise stuff. I thought he was one of the most exciting horror directors in the early 10s.

Do you think his last couple of films were made, almost feel director for hire, to hopefully get a studio to take a chance on him and throw money at him for his own original project. Maybe I’m reading it wrong, as really don’t know the background for him directing Blair Witch.

Would Dan Stevens make for a fitting James Bond? Always floated on my mind when Craig called it quits. Or is he too old now.

His early stuff had a distinct style with a blending of genres like action and horror with indie mumblecore and laced with dark humor. His bigger movies don't have any style whatsoever. I have no idea what his motives are. Maybe he's building studio cred to do original stuff again later, or he could just like the money. We're approaching ten years since The Guest so he doesn't seem to be in a hurry to get out of franchise town.

Always heard/read other names, but never Stevens at the time. Even now.

With projects like Thundercats & Face/Off 2 attached to his name. Though the Face/Off sequel might be interesting.
